Quickie Review: M105

I picked up the kit from autodetailingsolutions. Hey Ryan, did you say that the W66 backing plate works well?

They have great prices. I bought mine at my paint supply store with my nice discount and it was the same price as what ADS sells it for, so I know they are cheap.

I got my W66 backing plate at ADS when I bought my M105 and love it.

Just a thought on the "medium polish discussion"--I typically use Presta 1500 or SIP *after* compounding with a wool pad and a heavy cut compound. Next week I am going to try to use 105 wool, then step to 105 with a polishing pad, then UFSE. I have a 2005 645 in the shop right now that is *hammered* and needs some serious correction. I feel confident ater using the 105 with a polishing pad lately that it can be a great middle step after wool simply by changing pads.

Joe, Try going from M105 with a heavier cut wool right to UF with the 3M blue polishing pad. I used a yellow edge on that black 2003 Z06 for 3-4 passes at 1700 and went straight to UF with the 3M blue polishing pad at 1700.



If you do have to do a middle step, I like the edge green wool with P1500.

I do like using SIP and LC orange pads for most of my correction but it seems like M105 is much more versatile. I was thinking a 6.5inch LC purple wool+M105 on the Flex would take care of serious swirls and defects etc, is this true? I would then follow up with 106ff on white foam for now until I get some Ultrafina. Can M105 on orange foam or even white foam take SIP's place for light to mild correction jobs or is it too aggressive? And how would M105 take care of oxidation with a purple wool pad?

I'd also like to find out a definitive answer for this. However, i don't know if the M105 would be effective with the Flex (i know it was developed for the rotary). The Flex might not have the adequate RPMs .

Still wondering about this^^. And also becuase I wont be able to use ultrafina with the proper 3M UF blue pad will an LC green be fine for finsihing instead?

In all fairness I don't have much experience with X3. Brian and I used it on a Porsche 911 Cab and the dusting was just crazy. The finish it left behind was terrible by rotary (or I should say "looked terrible") and the dusting was excessive. However, by switching to the white side of the pad and working the polish would remove (not fill, as evidenced by wiping with ISO or PrepSol) the nasty finish. However it would leave nasty product "clumping" in seams and edges, and left behind very light holograms.



Brian shook his head (I continued to try System One) and grabbed M105 and did a side right next to the cut area down with X3. The finish was way better (after cutting) and the defect removal was much better (the System One side had light RIDS still). Brian finished down with 3M UF-SE and a blue pad and had, as expected, zero holograms and a flawless finish. On the X3 area, there was still light rids and light hologramming.



I would assume that lack of experience was part of the problem, and I could refine my System One skills, but I probably will not invest the time, since, IMO, there are many products out there that do the job much better and faster.



X3 (despite the holograms, which might be from the excessively soft Edge foam on the soft Porsche paint, which made for some "grabbing") did leave a very nice gloss behind, which rivaled the gloss and clarity of the finest finishing polishes.

If 105 is heavy, when SIP is Medium I would take care, it's one thing to buy a product because it cuts well it's another to use it when the paint doesn't need that much cut.

Thanks everyone - I've really been looking for the "next great compound"...and it sounds like this one it is. I really don't know what's so special about that backing plate, but I just ordered one too, along with a gallon of M105, so I guess I'll be finding out.

I really need to know how this stuff works with a LC orange pad.

I tried 105 with an orange LC "mushroom top" pad and diidn't like it all. I didn't feel as though there was enough pad contact with the paint and switched over to wool. My orange pad is new and still very stiff, so this may have been the reason why?



I also tried using a purple foamed wool pad which worked great with the 105, but It loaded up with product easily after only a few panels. Make sure you clean your pad frequently with this product.
