Anyone live in Vegas?

I'm interviewing down with the LVPD in their CSI department at the end of October. It isn't really much of an increase in pay from what I'm making now, but my house has almost doubled in value since I bought it, so I anticipate being able to sell it and pay off my vehicles and student loans and only leave me with a mortgage as far as debt. That would actually make the move worth it and enable me to afford a small cost of living difference. So what I'm just wondering is what people know about the housing market in Vegas and if there is a particular area that is better to live than another if one had to commute to the police station every day.

On a side note, to be an actual Las Vegas CSI would be probably about the coolest thing I've ever done. lol Just to be able to tell friends back east and down in Texas what I'm doing for a living now would be worth the headache of moving. Not to mention that it is what I went to school to do essentially, so it fullfils that purpose too. What better use of an obsessive compulsive detailer with a criminal justice and legal research background? lol

Coincidently, I had lunch with a friend today that has family with a home for sale in Las Vegas.
The owner was just transferred to Iowa a short time back.
If you would like more info, PM me with some questions and I can ask them.
I also have two friends that own homes there. One spends the winters there and the other vacations there with the idea that he will retire there.

Like I said, get me some of your questions and I will see if they can answer some of them.

I'm not sure what the housing market is like down there, so I really don't know what my price range is yet. I guess I'm just looking for information about where I should start looking for a house to get something in a safe neighborhood that isn't a million dollar home.

Don't spoil it for me. I still haven't gotten that far down the list of my DVR stuff I need to catch up on. Fall is a brutal time for my detailing and I'm way behind. lol

I'm still at Season 5...been spending my time catching up with Heroes,Prison Break and Supernatural :D

The wife has a friend that moved to Vegas they love it, homes are much cheaper than here in CA...lots of new developments being built...and there is a lot of money in detailing..all those casinos have limos and very rich clientele that come in to gamble.

I would move there if it wasn't for the wife's family and the heat in the summer.

One thing about relocation I learned while working in real estate, find a good national real estate company that can help you sell on one end and buy on the other by referral...its how we did it with Century 21 for people doing what you are...they can help you with all kinds of info like the good areas, school systems, etc

Jngr,

I have never lived in Vegas except out of a hotel. For several years my job required me to spend 50% of my time in the LV, Henderson and occasionally Reno (far less time here). All I can say is you couldn't pay me to live there. I can't take the heat and don't care for the downtown life. There are some nice places to live in the Henderson or Summerlin areas and I believe the home pricing was fairly comparable to Utah. I believe other cost of living items are slightly higher. They build their houses completely different than we do for the Utah climate. Most of it is stucco over white Styrofoam. Most of the people I know that live there never visit the strip it's as foreign to them as it is to us.

Don't forget that most city jobs require you to live within city limits. Good luck with the job.

That's a good point. My friend had a brother who worked for LVPD, infact the brothers wife did also. They lived in the city though I don't know that it was a requirement. I ran several retail stores in the area. Gang crime was huge. The number of times my stores were tagged and vandalized was incredible. I never heard of anyone being arrested for it even though they new the gangs. They could use a good CSI man though I'm sure it would be on more important cases.

I'm looking at houses in the city limits, so that isn't an issue. The heat doesn't really bother me either. Remember, I moved up here from Dallas. ;) I'm not a snow person at all. In fact, I've never been skiing in my life and I don't plan to. I've got a very low tollerance for cold. Las Vegas has been on the radar as a place to move for quite some time.

I've owned a second home there for about eight years, and spend about three months a year there now. I can tell you what it's like to live there from the perspective of a native Californian who grew up and was educated in northern CA, and who has worked in high-tech in Silicon Valley for 20+ years. PM me, I'd be glad to talk on the phone if you'd find it helpful.

Las Vegas is uh, different, especially for people used to working with well-educated white collar professionals.
