Windshield Chip Repair

Hey everyone.....may I get some advice, please?

The windshield on my 09 vehicle has about 4 small rock chips on it, yet the paint on my front end is fine....go figure! AND, my 8 year old daily driver has a pristine windshield! but I digress, lol.

To repair these chips, is this something a DIY'er should do or should I just take the car to one of those Safelight places?

I have no problem spending $$$$$ ..lol...I just hate having my car in other people's hands.

Thanks

Melissa

I honestly forgot the name of the company we used, but a few years back we had someone smash in our window for a poc GPS thing ...you can imagine... :hairpull:mad::angry:furious:

But friend recommended, so I called and you know what? It was painless (still immensely irritating that some pos would smash in my window for something worth MAYBE 20 bux....sigh that's philadelphia for you) the guy showed up in the morning, he went right to work and in 30 minutes I had a brand new window in perfect working order! I think I paid somewhere in the ballpark of 200 (it was years ago so...memory's hazy)

I would think that if that's what the company does, you should be in good hands (especially if they come you your house and do it on site....come on...it doesn't get better than that)

I don't want to replace my windshield, though. I have 4 small rock chips, is all. And yeah, I'm in NYC...I know all about POS people...lol

lol no kidding me too lmao trust me the lowlifes in philly are worse--even though you're not replacing it--that polymer fill thing seems pretty cool.

Sorry I was all over--the point was these guys seem to know what they're doing when it comes to window/shield repair/replacement. I mean save for maybe a quick google search / yelp to see the reviews of the people around you, I think you'll be in good hands.

Check with your insurance company and see if they cover this kind of damage without applying a deductible. I believe it varies based on what state you are in.

hmmm good point....though I get the feeling in our great state, we'll probably end up having to cough up the money ourselves... though it would be interesting to find out otherwise...I know ny will reimburse you if potholes etc cause damage to your car (though it's a pita because you have to file a report through NYPD...which means you pretty much have to sit there till they decide they want to mosey on over)

lol....true about the cops here! I had a car stolen once...and yeah, they couldn't be bothered with me....I'm in Queens, btw

L M A O ... yea, you WOULD be in the borough where they'd only show up if it's entertaining for them lolol .....around here they seem to be bored...

I don't know if this is the case with all chips, but I had a chip filled once and the shop said the repair will stop it from spreading but won't make the chip 100% invisible.

In fact, after the repair, I think it was only maybe 10% less visible, haha.

Ended up just replacing the windshield.

the chips are pretty small. I'm debating whether to just leave them be and chalk it up to wear and tear. It just kills me that there are no chips on my DD!!!

What windshield filling thing? They do sell kits for DIY-ers but I think I'm just gonna run her down to the Safelight place and see what they say. On a side note, I went to a Ford car show today and a few of my friends with Mustangs have rock chips, also.....guess we just drive these cars too hard hahahaha

i think it's some kind of suction thing they put over the windshield chip to contain it while it fills the that chip with some kind of filler...

lol well i don't know if it's from driving too hard or if it's from all the gravel that kicks up from driving through the never-ending construction mess that is the BQE lol

no, its not driving to hard. it can happen anytime. 90% on hwy. check with insurance. if you have at least comprehensive coverage, they will cover it deductible waived. if you are in new york, check with your insurance. ask them if you have windshield option in there. a lots of people in NY do. if you do, they will pay for windshield replacement. ;)
