Which Clay Bar Kit???

I want to get some clay but am unsure on what to get. I want a fine grade clay since my car isn't heavily contaminated and I don't need a clay bar kit since I already have microfibers and ONR to use as lube.

I don't want to spend more than $20 and would prefer to buy locally if possible. Any ideas on which to get. Right now I'm thinking of either the Meguiars or Mothers clay.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Josh

though the more seasoned guys will have a better idea, I'd prolly buy up some sonus blue(or was it sonus green...) i think..I mean more or less any fine clay bar is going to be similar to any other fine clay...so I suppose it's just a matter of which you can get cheaper or easier--whichever suits you better...

Not sure I'd say that all fine clays are all the same  But then I haven't experimented much at all since trying the Sonus Green (which takes some work to cut through even Meguiar's New Car Glaze!).

I've only clayed my car once, and I used Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay. They claim to be "the single finest clay composition available today". It seemed to work really well for me, of course your mileage may vary...

Accumulator, that kit is a fair price but shipping is $10:angry:

I think I'll just go to Target/Walmart and get either the Meguiars or Mothers clay bar kit. Any suggestions on which one???

Thanks for the comment guys. Can't wait to try claying.:tongue2:

Josh,

I like Clay Magic Blue, Autozone carries it. However, Advance Auto has coupons all over the web effectively making the Mothers kit about $10. For two bars of clay, a nice MF towel and some lube, I can get by with slightly lower grade clay.

Heh heh, I'm usually the wrong guy to ask when cost is a factor :o

I've never used any Meguiar's clay, but the Mother's I've used seemed identical to my Griot's and was OK. But I think I'd go with ClayMagic blue if I were using something OTC.

I used Griot's clay on a black Bentley(soft paint) that had minor contaminants and surprisingly didn't witness any marring what so ever. Not sure on the price because it was the car owner's clay. I used Clay Magic(blue) when I did the initial correction and remember it leaving marring after.

Very interesting! I've never used the ClayMagic Blue but was kinda interested in trying it (not that I'll really need much more clay in this lifetime ;) ).

Griot's has never marred paint for me, unless I commited a user-error. But I also wonder if it's still the same as it was the last time I bought some (the yellow was their v2.0 when I got mine).

When you used the Griot's, what did you use for lube?

I used Speed Shine for the lube. Yeah the Griot's clay was kinda yellowish and worked great for this minor application. I'm surprised you of all people haven't tried the AM stuff. I highly recommend it!!

Woohoo...6000 posts!!:pizza:

Heh heh...you guys.... :chuckle: Actually, I often just leave my clay stuck to the rim of a wash bucket or the top of my lube bottle! Since I usually just pitch it as soon as it's contaminated, that works OK for me. But those plastic jars the Griot's clay comes in are awfully nice and I use those and the Sonus boxes for the clay I want to keep "safe".

David Fermani- With the Griot's clay/SpeedShine combo, I often felt that the SpeedShine's "waxes" (or whatever's in the stuff) compromised the clays effectiveness, or at least made it *awfully* gentle. Coming from me, the guy who likes uber-gentle clay, that's saying something, huh?!? I've used other lubes with it with good results.

What "AM stuff" were you referring to? Or did you mean "CM"?

When it comes to Clay, I used Griot's for ages, starting with their original green stuff. I've used a bar or two of the seemingly identical Mother's when I needed some in a hurry. Then I started on the various Sonus ones. I liked the Sonus "Block" v1.0 so much that when I had a chance to buy out David's stock of Ricardo/SmartClay I got enough to probably last this lifetime. Then I bought weekendwarrior's supply of the really aggressive Sonus gray v3.0 (the stuff that mars something awful) for aggressive work. With loads of those two, and the Sonus SFX for normal use, I haven't had cause to look into other clays.
