Which Backing Pad

I have attempted to try to wade through the ton of information I found when searching concerning the 7336. I think I have decided on the Sonus Pad Kit, the 3 1Z polishes--is there a certain backing pad that is recommended? Is that all I will need also? I have Zaino for my normal polish/washes. Thanks.

The Sonus pad kit should come with a Sonus backing-plate. That's the one I now use...it's excellent.

Use to use the Megs backing-plate, but it doesn't have the flexibility of Sonus because it has its own hard plastic backing. The Sonus is all urethane. I found it vibrated less, and was smoother at all speeds due its lighter weight (no heavy plastic) and flexibility.

I have the megs and the CMA backing plate. I hate the megs, the pads don't stay on tight and I don't like that it doesn't flex much :(

I use the Sonus DAS pad kit exclusively and love it, no contest. The DAS kit comes with the correct backingplate which is a 5" unit and will require a 5" counterweight for a perfect balance. I believe your 7336 came with a 6" counterweight so you will need to buy one which is around $5 from coastaltool.com

I have found that a 5 inch backing plate, 6-6.5 inch pads, and a 6 inch counterweight to be the best combo. It runs much smoother than a 5 inch counterweight.

I guess this is different from person to person because I don't agree. I've done it both ways and found the 5" counterweight to be much smoother with the 5" backingplate and 6" pads. Now, when I moved up to the 6" backingplate and 7.5" pads, the 6" counterweight was the only way to go. Regardless, I don't ever see much of a difference until you are on speed 6, so it won't really matter too much.

My PC came with a 5" counterweight and running a 5" backing plate with 6.5" pads it runs very smooth even at speed 6.

From what stevet is saying you may want to try it before you bother changing out the counterweight. Here is a post by Jimmy Buffit where he found no differece at all between the two counterweights when using 6" pads:

As always, YMMV ;) . Since different users are having different experiences just find out what works best for the combo (pads, backing plate, speed) you'll be using.

That's everything in a nutshell right there. :xyxthumbs

This topic has been discussed several times before. Like anything else you have people who like one way and people who like another. I like the 6 inch weight with the 5 inch plate and 6 inch pad and there are other people here on Autopia that feel the same. The best thing is try both and see what you like. The weights are very cheap. I notice the difference a lot on the higher speeds.

Also keep in mind it's not so much the size of the plate that matters, it's the weight of the plate that matters. I use a Megs 5 inch plate it may be heavier than some of the other 5 inch plates and thats why my PC runs better with the 6 inch weight.
