What do you guys use to clean exhaust tips?

Just wondering, because I see a lot of clean exhausts in the click and brag section, but I never know what was used. I think this is one thing that really sets off the detail....clean and polished pipes.....(hope that didn't come out wrong):grinno:

I would like to know about the Chrome outside as well as the stainless inside....

Steel wool on the stainless?? Polish on the chrome?? Cheap stuff...expensive stuff??

Thanks!

Mike

Depending on the material of the tip and condition, we use 0000 steel wool, then either Flitz or Extreem metal polish to finish. My SUV has a brushed stainless tip, I always go over it with 0000 steel wool to bring back the luster (which is somewhat dull anyway).

Thanks Walter....I can buy the 0000 steel wool at Lowes/Home Depot?? The inside of most of the tips I have seen are unfinished SS, so I guess the steel wool would work best for that.

themightytimmah...thanks timmah....

I like S100 Polishing soap. Once it's clean, I'll toss on a little Poli-seal for added gloss.

I'm going to pick up some of that S100......(is that Poorboys?) The poli-seal ......any poli-seal??? maybe poorboys EXP? (I have a full bottle)

S100 is the brand and you can pick some up at your local Harley dealer. Poli-seal is Optimums brand but EXP should work. you will find alot of products for chrome and ss at your Harley dealer.:up

:thx ...awesome...thanks..... I have one right down the road from me....a fairly good size shop too.

The biggest problem with SS tips is they are a very poor quality of stainless.... The word stainless itself should tell you it doesn't stain or corrode.

If you have access to a lathe go get yourself some 316L Stainless pipe and uirn the wall down and then polish it then run a cutter down the inside at high rpm and low travel to clean it up .

You will end up with a tip that doesn't need more than being included in the normal car wash.

You will also have extentions that don't pick up exhaust carbon... ever.

The tips in the pix below have had nothing but a wash and the inside have not been touched in close to 3 months.

I used steel wool with a bucket of soapy water, then cleaned with Autosol (paste) to bring up the shine, and then used Meg's NXT metal polsih to bring up the shine :
