Urine smell in the vents - what does everyone use?

Hey guys, this is a new territory for me in detailing.

On my daily driver, my vents have a subtle smell of urine. When I turn the heat on, the smell is stronger. I can try to look for OTC de-odorizer and spray into the vents but I really don`t know if that is the most effective solution.

What are you guys using? And how often do you have to treat?

Urine! Gross.

The following has worked in the past for me to remove musty odors:
1. Check/ replace your cabin air filter in case the smell is coming from it
2. 1Z Einszett Klima-Cleaner to get down into the HVAC system and clear out anything that`s lurking

Good luck!

Thank the neighborhood cat, which likely sat on the hood and took a p!ss over the cabin air intake.

I recently became aware of this product -- haven`t tried it yet, but it sounds promising. You can buy a small sample for do-it-yourself application on Amazon.

Another thing to do is turn your heat on full blast and spray Lysol (because it kills germs and that`s what`s wrong) at your AC intake (usually at the end of the hood between hood and windshield). This gets rid of it pretty quickly. It is normally cause by your condenser leaking inside the system and causing mildew to form.

My parents have a 2012 Volkswagen Passat and it too has a urine odor. Interested to see what else is recommended.

Ok first order is change cabin air filter. Second is go to website and order fresh wave liquid odor counteractant. We distribute it just so you have full disclosure (an no I can`t sell it to anyone here because that`s not right ) but you can buy online or buy a consumer version at bed bath and beyond that is pretty good too.

It works great on smoke and odors. Turn car on AC and mist into intake vents. Shut car off and jet stemrwam a few trigger sprays into vents. Let sit overnight or a few hours and you should be good to go. We sell this to hospitals and nursing homes for a similar odor control issues.

This problem is extremely common in AZ due to the heat. Very simple solution. Before you park and turn your car off, turn your A/C to "non-circulate" position. This allows the moisture in the A/C vents to dry vs. sitting in a closed environment. It begins stinking when it is trapped inside the A/C vents as it has nowhere to evaporate. When you leave the A/C in the non-circulate position fresh air can get inside allowing the moisture to dry out into the atmosphere.

Thanks for the advice Rob. Although I never use re-circulate, I will take a mental note to make sure it stays off when I`m about to turn off my car.

UPDATE: So I had the chance to take out the cabin filter. The culprit seems to be the cabin filter. Took out about 5 hand fulls of leafs stuck in there. The funny thing is, the cabin filter is only 1.5 years old.. exactly how long I moved to my new house LOL. In my past years, I would have mild layer of dust when I change my filter every 2 years.

Thanks again everyone
