UK Detail: Mr.Paul Dalton

I am not beating up on anyone. I think the guy is a genious for doing it personally and if I could do it myself in the states I would. But I don't think many people around here would fall for it or pay for it. So I am back to my small $200 to $500 dollar details and loving it. I wish he was my friend!

Aye. Quite simply, it's finding the right customer & marketing correctly. I'd like to know what oils he mixed with Menzerna.

I guess we are all just under payed.

Amen. Wish we could charge by the hour, spend at least 10 hours on the vehicle, and have customers willing to accept the work involved.

Dalton is good, uses the right products. P21S Auto Wash, DF Concours Cube, insanely expensive DFT Meter. (I think the old 6000 model).

I'd guess he just mixed something in to increase the working time? RAG came up with cutting Menz polishes 70/30 with RMG a while back and it works wonders for cutting down on dusting.

it's funny that anyone looks down on the guy for charging so much. if i could charge that much i surely would. more power to him for marketing a service and being successful. at the end of the day it's a business and all about $$$$. i doubt any of his customers are unhappy with what they get. imagine having owners of million dollar cars angry at you for messing it up. think he would be in business long if just one of them sued him or gave bad word of mouth?

I dont look down on him. I do consider the implications of his work (as mentioned in other tread linked to on page previous) on the customers bill in relation the performance of the product/s.

I'm willing to bet its something along the lines of a glaze or lubricating agent - RMG, Omega Glaze, etc. With the right connections, you could get a bottle of just the lubricating agents they put in polishes.

More power to the guy. If he finds he can get away with such a pricetag than good for him!

His work certainly proves he CAN detail, so I have respect for him.

Does Paul do that much more than us other detailers? Yes and no. I see no one else using a laptop or taking as many steps. Is all this needed? No. Is he getting paid for all of this? Hell yes. That's the big difference here. Everyone criticizes him because of what he charges when the issue really is him getting paid. His customer's are not dumb millionaires. They got that way by being smart. Money is all just relevant.

He is a great detailer and business man.

I wonder how he handles all this criticism? Maybe I could learn how to from him. There's so much of it out there.

I respect what he does. He is a good detailer and has a team of good people working to market him, more power to him. That said, we all know here on Autopia that many, many members can achieve similar results for less. Does that mean Mr. Dalton is overcharging, or Autopians are being under-payed? I think a little of both; but you can't fault the guy for making money. He definitely isn't a hack, so it isn't like he is doing a disservice. I don't think there is any reason to deride him.

Justin - I would say he handles criticism by realizing he is a skilled detailer, and just going about his life and work. As long as his customers are happy he is doing a fine job, regardless of what people on the internet might say.

The man obviously has skills and he put a lot of time into that detail. The owner of the car? He's nuts to spend that kind of money on a daily driver. I have a feeling unless he takes it back regularly, he is going to have a really hard time maintaining the finish at that level.

Did you just repost this or is that you Vectra???

I do have more respect for Paul not that I see what he does. The fifth gear feature didn't really make him look that impressive. Most detailers clean the wheels, wash the car, clay the car, remove swirls, polish and then wax.

Is all of his expensive stuff just a gimic...? Maybe, but power to him because he can charge them 100X what any of us can charge our customers.

Wasn't the guy with the car the friend? I need to slow down and read everything.

That is the only way I can see someone have their "regular" car detailed by PD.

I doubt that PD reads Autopia. He knows how to detail and has other ways of learning of new stuff. m2c
