The Workout/Weight Loss Thread

The shorts are worth, it, I promise! Pearl Izumi Attack shorts absolutely rock.

Your frame size might be right but seat height and fore and aft adjustment, along with handlebar height and reach are all adjustable and can make a big difference in how you feel on the bike.

I picked these ones up on Amazon as they were a little cheaper and seemed to have more good reviews. :)

"Pearl iZUMi Men's Quest Cycling Short,Black,Medium"

Apparel; $34.29

They also set my seat height for me but they did nothing with the bar height. I also picked up some nice grips last weekend has my hands were starting to fall asleep on rides 20+ miles...they seemed to help. :)

Valentine's Day I started Nutrisystem and working out on Nautilus at 5 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Although I only work out about 30 minutes each of those days (and occasionally walk with my wife), I've dropped 52 pounds as of this morning.

The food is good too, although I do cheat with an occasional steak.

Mike (now 6'3" and 214 lbs.)

MSOsr- Are you doing the standard (at least it was "standard" back in the day...) Nautilus workout with minimal (but very tough) work sets? If so, that 30 min. is probably one productive half-hour.

214 oughta be a pretty good for a guy your height. Guess it depends what those pounds are made of though ;)

I signed up again at the Gym for another year this week. Trying to get into the cardio which is boring for me. They have TV's which help, but I tend to not push as hard while watching.

One set each of leg curls, leg extensions, lat pull, triceps, biceps, bench press (vertical), deltoid machine and abdominal machine. Usually throw in a few triceps pulldowns on the Universal, with maybe some dumbbell curls.

The one set with each is up to 12 reps. When I can go past 12, I add weight the next session. As you might expect, I've added a ton of weight to the machines from where I started. For example, I've added over 100 pounds from where I started on the triceps machine.

I want to lose about 15 more, just to remove some 63 year old baby fat.

MSOsr- Yeah, some people really do well on that Nautilus regimen.

You ever have your body composition/fat measured? Back when I really cared about such stuff I went by that instead of my overall weight.

Scott, those cycling shorts rock!

On a side note, they feel like you crapped your pants when you walk around in them! :D

I did in 1998, when I worked out religiously and went down to 186 lbs. My family thought I looked horrible and needed to gain weight. I was at 6% body fat.

I know I'll never get there again and really don't care. I look at photos from then and think, "I thought I looked good then?" I'd rather look good in clothes and facially, than to be buff at age 63 when naked.

Mike (goals are different now)

Rasky-first time I put on cycling shorts, I knew how women feel when they have to use pads. :lol

I wear mine out in about 6 months, usually around the 2500-3000 mile mark the padding starts to break down a little and they aren't as comfortable.

BTW, passed the 1000 mile mark since I got back on the bike on June 14th after my 5 week injury layoff. Really fast ride tonight, first out and back was around 19 mph, then the next two were at 21-25 mph and I hit 30.5 on a level ground, no wind, no wheel sprint. Not bad for turning 50 this year, eh? :)

Nice! That's a lot of miles in a pretty short period of time! Congrats!

I'm only averaging 15 mph right now but hopefully when I get a road bike it will jump up a bit. Justin (from Offtopic) has been helping me out with bike stuff and in return I've been helping him with some detailing stuff. I may have him find me a good used bike for now and just go through it. ;)

Bruce Drago- Welcome to Autopia!

I dunno about "quick results"...I always figure it took a while to gain excess bodyfat so it'll take a while to get rid of it.

The diet I have gives quick results. While on the diet I lost 7 lbs in a week and a half and I ate as much as I could possibly shove in. Why am I still 15 lbs overweight you ask... I can't stay on the diet mere than a week and a half without going absolutly mad. You are never hungry on this diet. The problem is if you have every had good cooking you miss the taste. It is the same reason I told my boys when they were young to stay away from the ladies. Once you have had Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream it is hard to give it up for a long period of time. Didn't work with the boys either.

Here is the crux of the diet

1. All the meat you can eat as long as it is fresh. No cured meats i.e. bacon, salami ect.

2. All the veggies that you can eat on the list (low glycemic). No potatoes

3. Certain low glycemic fruits. No suger in any form and no sugar substitutes

If you want I can send you a list of all the foods. I lost five pound the first week

With all due respect how do you know aht that feels like??LOL:lol

TedFred- That diet sounds sorta similar to the Zone one that works so well for my wife. She's been on it since forever and she's very happy with it (though she's not fanatical about adhering to it either).

But yeah...I don't see people sticking with a diet they simply don't enjoy, at least not long-term. I'm lucky in that I simply don't care all that much for most "cheat foods".

I don't have a sweet tooth at all, my downfall is rich, fatty foods. Getting better, at least this time of year, working in 100+ temps and riding 150+ miles a week, I can eat whatever I want and lose weight. Got to adjust the eating habits before I have to drop my weekly mileage after the time change in the fall.

still swimming every other day, and doing around 40-60 laps of various drills and excersizes all together...

BigAl3- I'm guessing that you really *enjoy* the swimming, huh? Great that it works that way for you, and that you have the facility for it.

6'7" @ 265lbs here, trying to maintain bodyfat and put on more mass, still look too lanky IMO.

Should think about cutting soon though (which sucks), since none of my pants fit. Thank you squats for these 30" thighs.

Here's a tip for those looking to lose some weight. It's the most informative quote I've ever heard.

"Abs are made in the kitchen"

I lost 100lbs from doing no exercise/cardio and just watching food intake.

Lifting heavy now to put on mass, it's hard to control your appetite. haha
