Tell me from your experience with rust converter(as i havent used it as yet), once the rusted area is treated, does rust make a comeback after sometime, or is it gone for good(or converted for good) ?

thanks ;)

From my experience, the rust will come back unless you cut it out (remove) it. The rust converter certainly slows down the progression. If it were mine, and I used a rust converter, I wouldn't invest a whole heck of a lot of money into the repaint.

Chip Douglas- I'd say it depends on what you're treating (how bad it is, what it's exposed to, etc.).

I've used "Rust Avenger" convertor on stone chips (cleaned the rust out with a mild polish first, but no doubt left some) that've stayed converted (no additional rusting) for many years.

accumulator, the rust im trying to remove is located under the console, above gas, clutch and brake pedals.......in fact, what's rusted is those brackets holding them in place(pedals that is)........it got rusted from carpet cleaning, which were very very very thoroughly cleaned lol, yet so clean that too much humidity was left in the car for too long and tada ! rust has appeared there, and it s very tight and recessed areas for me to work in. So far i have been most successful removing rust with lighter fluid, but im thinking of trying toothpaste.

i wonder, would baking soda do a good job too ?

Truthfully, and though i keep the smile on, im near desperation, and that makes me real sad to realize im nearing failure at removing it :(

Don't give up, you can get it. Baking soda won't do it, you need something more aggressive, either mechanical or chemical or both.

I looked over your other, related post and I THINK what you need is one of the fiberlass scratch-brushes made for that kind of rust removal. They're sorta like the mechanical-pencil-style erasers where the eraser feeds out the end. These brushes have abrasive fiberglass filaments that feed out the same way; you use it like a pencil to "erase" the rust. Griot's have one that's part of their rust-converter kit (pn 50303) and they are also available from Micro Mark Tools (who also sell refills for it and a larger size that might be handy).

Use one of those to remove as much rust as you can get to. Then use a converter on what's left and paint over it with something that sorta matches whatever it used to look like.

i happen to have one of those fiberglass pencil-like nick sander......it works fine but wears off like crazy. i havent tried it on the rusted areas under console, but will definately give it a go.

would you have any idea what to use to get to those hard to reach places ?....round metal brackets that is. im taking a chance asking, yet i know there are no miracle way of getting there.

thanks all the same accumulator :)

Chip Douglas- Yeah, they DO wear out fast! Glad I found the Micro Mark refills. I'd have thought you could extend the bristles and reach the spots you're talking about, but I guess you have to be there to see just what you're dealing with. Applying the converter with long handled brushes might do it. Good luck!

long handled brushes is all i ve found too...............the rust there annoys me much, yet it doesnt show at all to others(however i know it s there), and i dont believe it will get any worse, since it s inside the car........i'll give it another try, and if it doesnt work then, i'll prolly be admitted to the mental patient ward lol :lol :shocked :scared

I said it in your other thread about this rust but I'll say again here that I've used a product called Phix with great success.

I sprayed it on a table I have & use for welding. It has a steel top w/no paint. It got covered w/heavy rust. I spray on a heavy coating of Phix, wiped it off, resprayed and even though it sits right out in the open and is subjected to heavy moisture no rust has reappeared in over a year of daily use. I even lay damp towels on it and no rust . Good stuff. PHIX

i agree that phix stuff sounds like a heck of a good product to inhibit rust formation...........i'll look it up on the web.

thanks for the tip ;)
