Rotary buffer vs. Porter Cable

What are the advantages or diadvantages of each. I have a Dewalt rotary that I got cheap last yr. Everyone seems to praise the porter cable why? Should I consider switching to improve my detailing?

when we refer to the porter cable.. or pc... we generally mean the Porter Cable Random Orbital Buffer. Its very different from the rotarys. Its safter to use, but its not as fast and effective.

I think both the orbital (pc) and a rotary are important for a detailing job.

As far as the Porter Cable and Dewalt rotary buffers... well they are both good and its kind of a toss up.

Hope this helps :D

I have all three discussed here: PC7424 dual action polisher, PC7428 rotary polisher, and the DeWalt DW849 polisher. If you've got questions about these machines, feel free to ask.

I feel the PC can do a great job. Ive used a rotary before, and its really not all that much better. Sure it can get deeper into the clear coat, but the PC can do the same stuff nearly. Only difference i see is that the rotary can hold a larger pad and it can heat up the clear coat. Disadvantages: burning through the clear coat, creating many swirl marks and holograms, etc.

Using both, I can say I feel 10000x more comfortable using a PC and i havent found anything it cant do.

i have both, and i like both for different uses. i usually follow up my rotary with my pc to make sure everything is perfect. but my pc usually only comes out once the big boy has taken care of the buffing. the pc seems to weak for me on really tough jobs. IMO

The advantages is the rotary is more agressive used more on older cars that the paint is more damaged and the PC is less agressive and does finer polishing w/o the dangers.

Paint is hard the rotary makes heat polishes much faster, to much heat is bad, specially on plastic and rubber. Rotarys can cause damage more ways then one.

What would you rather do (sample)

Polish for 5 hours using PC

Polish using rotary then PC for 3 to 2 hours

Rotary good to have strong hands, if not you soon will have if used a lot

PC is lightwight eazy to use
