Personal attacks suggestion

Some people have a hard time with constructive criticism, but the "tone" in which it is delivered is more important, was it said in jest, is the person naturally cinical (?), or was it malicious?
Sometimes things are said in the heat of the moment , that people later regret.

It's not always an easy call

Quite true, but the offending poster could repost the information without making any personal comments.
A generic comment when the post is deleted such as "Post deleted because of content that was of no value to the thread", might help steer the poster back on track.
The response by the moderator would need to be something the mods could enter with a keystroke rather than create something for each occurance. Kind of like the guest notification when they try to use the features of the site before they register.
Hey, if it was easy, I would have applied for the job.:D

Can I ask why you take offense?

Truthfully I don't. Again though my point is that if I did find it personally offensive, would you delete it? If not does this then mean my feelings and opinions do not have value on this fourm?

So rules need to be followed but they must be clear and carried out across the board, no favoritism.

Name calling, making insults, threats, things that steer threads way off track by turning them into personal showdowns between particular members, that's the sort of stuff I would think would qualify.
This seems to pretty well cover my thoughts on the subject.

Also, the decision would be the moderators, not up for vote. They only have to answer to Dwayne.

It might not work, but we have made changes and then had to reverse them in the past.
They say you learn from your mistakes.
I should really have learned a lot by now

I would like to say that I find this site excellent. It has far fewer problems than other sites I have seen. The thing is that as DC's population grows it will attract different types of people from all races, religions, geographic regions, education levels, income levels, etc. It won't be able to maintain that small town feel that makes it so cool here. Just like a small city that experiences a growth boom DC will have growing pains. Nature of the beast I guess.

The same is true for the moderators and the admin elsewhere.

One thing that seems to escape the members of both DC and Autopia, these sites are not a democracy. They are the property of the site owners and whatever decisions they make are theirs to make and live with.
Anyone that thinks it is easy should try it for awhile.

Heck, I'd just delete any post that didn't agree with me and ban those that didn't come around. That's just one of the reasons Dwayne doesn't have me as a moderator.:D
My boss for 40 years always thought I would end up with just he and I left at the place. It didn't work out that way. People need and want someone to be in charge. Management by committee just doesn't work.

So true about it not being a democracy :bigups Posting here, there and everywhere else is a priviledge.

i think this is perfect for what should be deleted. some people may get offended by other people's tone, but we are here for one reason to share info and learn from each other. not everyone will agree with everything, but that shouldn't lead to ignorant or rude treatment to other members. a standard rule of treatment can only help the proffesional feel of the website by helping to eliminate the b.s.

this is a great idea! but again w/e has been done prior has worked. DC is still alot more calm and respectful than the "other" site.

but if a decision was to be made i think general common sense should be taken. not all posts are negative even if they sound negative. u cant always cater to everyones needs so if the mods feel its ok, then i guess its ok...

I think everybody should remember :
1. We are all guests at DC
2. Leave your attitude BEFORE you step into DC , be nice
3. If you have an attitude, contact Fuzz for a free whack by the mighty Axe or go drink some milk or something :hippi

Are these not the type of comment that could be looked at as personal attacks to members of Autopia that also frequent DC?

Even if spoken in jest?

Both sites are great tools for learning about detailing. I personally don't always agree with either site's rules or ways of handling things or letting a single person spout off continuosly without really contributing anything relevant, but then again, I'm just a guest. I say that the moderators are here for a reason. If you don't like the way things go you can always leave or don't frequent one place or the other.

I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to know when a thread has gotten off track, especially when two people are calling each other out by name. There's no need for it. I have been guilty in the past, and probably will be in the future. I vote for keeping the place an informative medium to discuss detailing topics. Sure is an awful lot of drama to be a detailing forum. :dunno

Just my .02.

You can't please everybody in this world. I'm against people attacking others in public, and you can bet that if I see an attack then its going to be dealt with, but we can't be out there making sure that everybody is friendly and proper. C'mon guys... we are all adults, right? Honestly, if someone comes crying to me just because they got a little offended at what somebody said just because they are a little sensitive, I'm probably going to suggest they grow a thicker skin. I don't want Detail City to become a board where everybody has to be politically correct and proper all the time or else they risk getting the axe. People who come in just to cause trouble will surely be dealt with, but the moderators here aren't going to be the "polite police". Some people need to be a little less sensitive and read between the lines. The internet doesn't always convey the sarcasam that was intended. Just think about it for a second before you react. If you are the type of person who is always looking for offense when none is intended then it may be you who gets the talking to instead of the other person. Let's all just try to act like adults and leave less work for the moderators.

I see no reason to delete personal attacks within reason. It’s just that much more work for the mods and if you can't deal with someone neg. commits grow up and get a life. I haven't seen this to be much of a problem here, but I'm a newbie and am not here daily. Now you should see how people are treated on other forums you can get a stupid newbie word in without someone jumping down you throat.

I get nothing, but help and confused here this is a great site.

And it won't be a problem
Also, if someone jumps down your throat, that person will most likely have a problem. :D

Disagreements and differences of opinions are to be expected and are welcomed.
IMO, personal attacks serve no purpose and don't belong on any forum.

Been in the biz for almost 3 decades and have been a member of several bulletin boards.

IMHO Dwayne's zero tolerance towards most forms of upheaval around here have made this the most civil of the "busy" sites on the internet.

It kind of amazes me at times.
