Meguiar's SCRATCH X(worked for me!!!)

Today, after washing my Xtreme, I did a complete inspection of the paint to see if anyone had struck my vehicle in a parking lot or any little imperfections that I might have not yet noticed and found a little scrape on the rear quarter quarter panel and a mark (that I knew I had) when someone bumped me at a stoplight. I busted out my Scratch X and applied some to a terry towel and began briskly rubbing the marks on the truck...WOW...no more black rubbings on the rear bumper and the scrape on the rear QP looks a whole lot better(removed the black marks, light scratches remain) I then followed that with a layer of EO WET P&W and now it is back to showroom condition(BETTER OF COURSE) (it only has 2000 miles on it) I give the product a thumbs up for sure...I just hope I don't have to use it that often!!!

I'm curious to know how this compares to 3M's SMR.

  • More or less aggressive?
  • Does it work in the same manner (abrasives break down with use & heat and get finer as you work it in)?
  • Can you use Meguiar's ScratchX with a PC or Polisher?[/list=a]

I'd have to agree that ScratchX works well, even for a detailing newbie like me. I made the mistake of drying with my California Water Blade without rinsing or wiping the CWB off before drying. There was a tiny bit of grit on the blade, and it caused a straight scratch right along the length of the hood. :scared

I went out, bought the ScratchX, used it according to the instructions, and the scratch is now virtually gone (it's still slightly visible under flourescent light, but invisible any other time).

ScratchX gets my :xyxthumbs

last time I used SMR I got a haze...The Scratch X leaves a really nice polished look...doesn't really need to be broke down...might be a pain to do a whole car with though.

  • ScratchX is not really meant to be used on the entire car. That is what SMR is for. ScratchX is really for the smaller stuff like what DCopp used it for. GS27 is essentially the same thing. I've had good experiences with that. This is a before and after on a door panel of a friend's car. You can really see how it got the majority of it out. The stuff that is left is just really deep scratches that went through the clear and some of it to the primer.

I love ScratchX and GS27. It should be applied just like DCopp said. Just put some on a towel and rub it in the direction of the rub or scratch. Its a little thicker than toothpaste and really easy to work with. A very valuable tool in any detailers kit.

It is definatly not meant to replace SMR. It is meant for a completely different purpose. SMR is for large areas and these scratch removers are meant for the smaller rubs and scratches that you don't want to bust out the PC for. I suppose you could use a PC with it but it would be messy and probably wouldn't work as well as SMR would.

I give it a thumbs up as well. Just make sure you follow up with polish and wax, as stated in the directions. If you hadn't noticed, it leaves the paint feeling grimey and rough. If you rub too hard, it lactually eaves some swirls. So take it easy, but make sure you rub it good enough. Just don't pound the car! lol

The pics that you showed, were you using scratch x or the gs27 stuff?

I have a small scratch on the rear bumper of my car (got it that way from the dealership and it was a BRAND NEW  ) and I also noticed a few light scratches on the left rear door. The bumper one is obvious and along with the scratch, there is a 1/2 moon face shape to it. The rear door one is hardly noticable unless your about 2 inches away from it.

Will the scratch X cover it up? I don't want to respray the whole bumper on a new car and have paint shade issues.

My plan of attack would be:

1) Scratch X

2) #7 (Show Car Glaze)

30 #26 (Hi Tech Yellow)

is this a good fit for it?

I don't have a digital camera so it hard to post the pics of the problem areas.

I have several layers of SG on my GN. There are a lot of small scratches i need to get rid of. Can I just apply the Scratch X on top of the SG and reapply SG afterwards?

I have actually tried using it with a PC a few times, and it turned out better than I thought. Like you said, it was pretty messy but it did help out quite a bit!

Again, like you said it really is ment for specific kinds of scratches/scuffs. I was able to reduce the visibility of some scuffs, with PC more than I could working on them by hand.

Its GS27. Its more expensive than Meguiar's ScratchX but I keep getting it as a gift from my dad. He gets me a tube every year for Christmas. I've ran them side by side before and they are pretty much the same. Go for the ScratchX if you see it side by side with the GS27.

Blackmirror,

Scratch-X contains fillers and oils, the area will need to be washed down before the SG is re-applied.

Wouldn't that negate the scratch-remove properties of ScratchX? If it doesn't have abrasives, then it's not really "removing" the scratch, it's filling it. And if it's filling it, you're not really going to get much benefit using it in conjuction with klasse.

Where did you read that it doesn't have abrasives? I'm pretty sure that it does. It will cause swirls if you don't use it properly so that has to signal that it has something of an abrasive quality. I have used AIO directly after GS27 before and never have I seen the scratches come back. I say that it does remove the scratch and fills what it can't remove.

A read a post where a meguiar representative had said that Scratch-X is chemicaly abrasive, and also has fillers. They stated that it was so light abrasivily, that you could buff all day long and never go through the clearcoat.

I have tried the Scratch X and I find that the 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound 1500 grit does a better job for less money !

The 3M will add more swirls and remove more paint too!

ok i just got a free sample of scratch X. tried on my GN on the small scratches. It left a nicely polished finish with the scratches less visible at the least. i applied it in an up and down motion then side to side then diagonally straight in all directions. Did I apply it correctly or are you supposed to apply with a circular motion?
