Meguiars Car wash?

I've been using the car wash soap from Meguiars for quite a while now. I used to use Mothers California Gold, but it seems as if I can't really find that anymore. The Meguiars that I use comes in a fairly large purplish bottle. Its the one that has the extra sudsing action just in case there are different types.

Any of you guys use or have used this product? What are your impressions of it? It is good stuff from what I can tell, but I just want to make sure that its not strong enough to remove my S100 and SG. And when I use it, I don't use alot of it. Just enough to the point where I get mild suds when moving the wash mitt over the finish. It says on the bottle that it doesn't remove wax, but I figured I'd ask here, since it seems alot of products on the market make claims that aren't always completely true. Meguiars is a reputable name in the car care industry, so I would think their product performs as advertised.

Well, you could be talking about the Deep Crystal wash, which is a hot pink bottle, but the shampoo itself is pretty much colorless, or the NXT wash, which is purple-blue. Both of them are fine for cleaning, I find the lubricity to be a bit better on the NXT, but the best Meg's wash is the Gold Class, which can be had for $10/gallon at Target.

If its purple its probably NXT. If its pink its Deep Crystal. Just read the botlle and tell us.

I use NXT, Mothers, TW Platinum, Eagle One Wet, Megs Soft Suds, CarPlan Triple Wax Wash and Wax and Autoglym (both English).

NXT is very good. NXT, Autoglym and Mothers have the strongest cleaning action. TW Platinum is the most gentle on wax. EO Wet is in between. NXT probably is a bit stronger on wax than the Mothers. On the other hand, it has a great ability to prevent water spotting...the best of the lot.

The best looking is the Autoglym followed by CarPlan.

None of them will actually remove the wax, but the stronger cleaning shampoos will reduce the life of your wax. As I said NXT is the strongest of the American products.

If you get a lot of fallout and don't wash as often then NXT is the way to go. Mothers is a good compromise. If you wash frequently (once or twice a week) then go for the milder ones like TW or EO.

I have used both the NXT and the Deep Crystal soaps, and I think they both work well. But I've heard so much about Gold Class soap, that I'm going to get a gallon of that at Target when I run out of my Deep Crystal soap.

I really like NXT car wash, but it does seem to take some of the slickness off a fresh wax application. It really does help prevent water spots and it's super lubricated. Plus, it suds like mad and smells great.

Gold Class is good, too, but I prefer NXT... maybe because I've been using Gold Class for so long that I'm just kinda bored with it. There's certainly nothing wrong with it, though.

Okay guys, it is the deep crystal version. The bottle sure looks purple to me though. I guess I'll continue to use this at least until it runs out. Do you think the car wash shampoos that aren't available at retail stores worth buying? If so, what "boutique" wash(s) would you recommend?

I've used Meguire's products for years, and I like thier car washes. Deep Crystal is my "go-to" car wash soap, but I'm going to try NXT wash soon.

The only "boutique" car wash I've used is Zaino's Z-7. WOW! Great, but pricey. $8.95 + shipping for 16 oz. Is it better than Meg's Deep Crystal? Yes. I think it's milder on the waxed surface, and suds up better, and the grape scent never ceases to impress me. It makes you WANT to go out and wash your car.

But Deep Crystal is like $4.50 a gallon, and available everywhere. You'll have to try it yourself to see if it's worth 8x the price (not including shipping), and the hassle of having to mail-order it.

Good luck!

Realizing that this can be a personal preference thing...I'll :argue: that opinion (good naturedly of course :D ).

IMO the best Meg's washes are #62 and #00. I thought the GC was just awful lubricity-wise compared to what I'm used to. I gave away my bottle of it and I never give away anything (preferring to, uhm, accumulate stuff...). I inherited a second bottle of it from my father and I still have it, but I only use it on rentals and loaners. Consumer-grade shampoos- yuck :p Guess I'm a shampoo elitist :chuckle:

Accumulator, I have seen you post about this before and it always puzzles me. Perhaps, because I *really* like the GC shampoo. :) I know you are a fan of the griots, which I have not tried, perhaps I have yet to feel *that* level of slickness. In other words, perhaps GC is the slickest that *I* have felt thus far.

Have you tried the NXT wash? If so, how does it fair in your opinion?

Sorry, I should have qualified my comment, but it was clear (to me anyway) that the thread starter was referring to OTC Meg's washes. Let me say that way back, I used #00, and then the Soft Gel, which I recall thinking at the time must just be the #00 with pink dye in it. Honestly, it's been a long time since I've used either, and in my pre-Autopian days, so I don't really remember what they were like, and it wouldn't really matter if I did, because my standards were different and therefore my criteria and recollections would be skewed. In my Autopian days, I have used DC and NXT, and I bought the GC recently and used it in my initial foam gun forays. It seemed so much better than the other two, that I wondered if it was just a foam gun phenomenon, so I did a bucket wash with it, and was just blown away by the difference to DC and NXT. I have a gallon of #62 that I got about the same time as the GC, but I haven't cracked it yet.

If GC is really that inferior to #62, or Griot's, that's really saying something for those washes. Is it possible that they have changed the GC in recent years and yours is older? If not, I'll be looking forward to trying the #62.

Setec- Yeah, I kinda veered off into ~boutique washes compared with the original post :o

I know what you mean about opinions getting skewed by the passage of time; it's been forever since I used #00 and my rearview might be a little rose-colored there.

My GC *is* a few years old and they might've changed it :nixweiss Also, I have sorta weird water here and that might make a huge difference. It sure *is* funny that I seem to be uniquely critical of the GC shampoo, huh?

See how you like the #62. It's what I used (along with Pinnacle) before I went gaga over the Griot's and basically quit using, or even trying, other shampoos.

I honestly didn't think that the GC could be much different than say, the NXT wash. So I was quite surprised when I found it to be different. But I also have become much more critical of my wash process this past year, because I have been listening to some guy who is emphatic about wash technique and not inducing marring during the wash process ;) . I was also fooling around a little with the Sonus wash around the same time I started using the GC, and that stuff was thin and not slick...so maybe it was just a comparative thing. When it gets into spring, and I'm washing some cars that will need to be polished, I'll try to do more of a side-by-side comparison, just for my own sanity. BTW, my bottle of GC does say "New, high-sudsing formula..." in the blurb on the back of the bottle.

Heh heh, my old bottle of GC is the "new, high sudsing formula" too :chuckle:

Oh, and you better watch yourself, listening to weirdos on the 'net ;)

you'll like the gc alot better. i tried the deep crystal soap and didn't care for it...

I've sampled many of Meg's soaps...they've got way too many.

I've been thru a gallon of GC. Wow, that took some effort! I am working on a $6 1/2 gallon of NXT, very good value, seems less harsh than GC.

The #00 is an excellent product but I've never seen it in large sizes. I like the #00 when I am looking for a no-frills wash but leaves a great finish...very nice stuff if you haven't tried it recently.

There are some very fine shampoos out there. Much of the decision is going to be a personal preference thing.

Kit carnuaba gold wash and wax is dirt cheap and and easy on lsp's. Water sheets off easier compared to NXT or Mothers Cali Gold soaps.

Um...now that I've used the Gold Class wash a little bit more, I find that it tends to streak rather badly. At first I thought this was from winter crud just being difficult to get off, but now I think perhaps the polymer that makes the GC so slick also tends to leave streaks if it dries before rinsing. Not sure if I need to dilute it more, or whether I just need to keep the car wetter (which sounds like a real chore in summer if I'm having trouble with it during a 40 degree winter wash).

Anyway, still not sure it's not a salt residue problem.
