I hate new car smell! Help me kill it.

Just bought a new Saturn Aura and the new car smell is terrible. It gives me severe headaches just to be in the car for a few minutes. Aside from leaving the windows open as much as possible, what else can I do to accelerate the dissipation of the new car smell? I am unsure if I should treat it the same way as tobacco, vomit, or mold and just shampoo, extract, ozone, and Febreeze it. The upholstery isn't really the cause of new car smell so... ????

The smell is all the new materials and glues evaporating. Since summer is coming up, I'd say leaving the windows cracked and parking your car in sunlight should help accelerate the airing-out process.

go buy one of those air freshners hang it from the mirror and take it completley out of the bag. guarantee you wont smell no new car smell

Go eat a big Mex lunch - washed down with Budweiser, then sit in your car and listen to the "music". Git r done!

Because of this the solution is not to cover it up, but to air it out. I'm not sure this is the sort of thing an ozone machine would help with, but I suspect not. Even if you covered up the smell the gases that are causing your headaches would still be in the air, perhaps along with other stuff that might just compound the problem. I agree with the idea to air it out in the sun as much a possible.

Likely the only thing that will work.

if you garage your car just leave the windows open. my new corvette smelled ugly. after a month of open windows smell is all but gone. i'm still working on the trunk. the resins/carpet glue that they use smells like road kill. good luck, most people LOVE new car smell!!!

Exactly. They are toxic and bad for your health. I thought new cars came with a warning sticker explaining this. Drive with the windows down or cracked. It will take a little time to air out. I just had my back window tinted and the urethane glue smell was in my cabin for a couple of days. Best thing to do is let it air out!

opening windows works well, but for a long amount of time.

On one of those in-depth news shows they proved that the fumes are bad. But I forgot what show it was.

Smoke a bowl in the car and keep the windows closed lol

Another option is if the vehicle is inside a garage, you could get either fans or an air mover to blow through the car while parked. I'm sure it won't fix it overnight, but will speed up the process.
