How to Remove Water Spots from Plastic Chrome

Hi everyone. I'm taking the plunge and getting serious about detailing my fleet. I have found a lot of helpful info on this forum but cant seem to find any product recommendations for plastic chrome polishing. I have some waterspots on the grille of the wifes 4Runner that I would like to remove safely without damaging the finish. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would start with a paint cleaner like Mothers Pre-Wax Cleaner or Poorboys Pro Polish -- a cleaner wax may do it as well.

:werd: Any mild polish should do the trick, but if you're really paranoid about it being plastic you're polishing on feel free to use a specific product like Meguiar's PlastX

I try to avoid using anything harsher than, say....Klasse AIO. The stuff that makes the plastic "chromed" can be kinda fragile and you won't know until you mess it up.

I agree. Someone recommended Never Dull and it scratched my grill.. it worked great on my chrome exhaust tips.

Yeah, the details escape me at present but it's something like a thin film of aluminum with a clear coating or something like that. Not "chrome" at all and products/processes that're perfectly OK on "real chrome" will mess it up but good.

i've used ultimate compound and a regular microfiber on chrome plastic emblems and they cleaned up nicely. i removed them first though.

Just remembered how I've messed up the chromed-plastic lettering on the bootlid of the Jag but hitting it a few too many times when polishing. Wore the "chrome" off but fortunately the edges show black instead of some really gross plasticy color. Now that the car's so old it's merely "patina" but I still wish I'd bothered to tape it off. And FWIW I've never used anything remotely aggressive on that car.

Did it clean up??

Best thing I have used on plastic chrome is Vanilla Moose. Just enough "bite" but not too harsh. Works fine by hand w/ a yellow Meg's applicator.
