honda civic vs toyota corolla

my pops is looking to get a new car (with auto transmission) as his 98 accord with over 175,000 miles is getting tired. the two choices are the top models of the honda civic sedan ex (without the navigation) and it's rival, the toyotta corolla ? he uses the car 98% of the time for work (50 mile drive each way), and for him to buy a step model up like the camry or another accord, is overkill. what do you think? i'm gearing more towards the honda... http://automobiles.honda.com/models/exterior_gallery.asp?ModelName=Civic+Sedan OR http://toyota.com/corolla/index.html?s_van=GM_TN_COROLLA_INDEX

can't go wrong with the civic, car of the year!

agreed. i know looks aren't everything (engine is just as important)... but the civic looks nicer, imo. they re-styled (looks like the little brother of the tsx) it this year. the corolla still looks the same... :nixweiss

He can't go wrong with either of them. Just have him take a couple of test drives. I would think with that kind of commute, he would want the more comfortable one.

The Corolla has a very awkward driving position. This has been noted in many reviews since the new model in 2003 and I agree completely!! I traded my '03 in on an '04 Accord in 2004 due to the seating/steering wheel position. It was killing my back, two hours at the wheel was the max I could live with.

Tell Dad to take a longer than ordinary drive in the Corolla before he plops down any $$.........I didn't and wished I had when it was all said and done. The Corolla's engine is louder than the Civic's also.

The new Civic, especially the Si is a very slick looking little car. Im by no means a Honda fan and I would definitley drive one of those!

If your father likes the newly designed Civic than I think he should go with it. The Civic overall just seems more refined than the Corolla.

for around $19,000 on the ex sedan, it seems like a pretty good deal. not to mention... that's the msrp price, in which it will probably be around $2000 less on invoice, which will probably bring it around $17,000...

The Honda Civic 100%:D:D

C'mon....Car of the Year....what more justification do you need??:D

Awesome engine, innovative interior, super-sleek looks, value, and bulletproof reliability....

I believe the Corolla can only be put into two of those categories:)

The Civic is overall a better "driver's car" and has a more solid feel, but the ride on the Corolla is more comfortable IMO.

I agree with RTexasF about the driving position on the Corolla. If you put the seat back far enough for your legs to reach the pedals, the steering wheel is too far away. If you put the seat close enough to reach the steering wheel comfortably, your legs are cramped up.

Your dad will probably feel more comfortable with the Civic coming from an Accord.

Not to throw stones but doesn't that make the Corolla uncomfortable? :nixweiss

True, the seating position makes it uncomfortable for taller drivers, but what I was trying to say was that the ride was more comfortable.

Welllllllll I would say Corolla, but then again I am biased... :D

I did get a chance to drive and mess with the new Civic EX coupe as my buddy traded in his older Civic for one... One thing I hated was the engine bay. It is soooooo cramped!!! It was PITA just for me to change his bulbs... Dunno if you dad does work on the car himself or will mod it, but that is one thing to keep in mind...

I own an 03 S and I have owned the Corolla since late 02... Haven't had any problems and do not find the seating to be weird odd (am 6 feet tall). The engine is somewhat loud to people due to VVT-I... Doesn't bother me and since mine is modded it is louder. The only thing I did not like is the stock height, it was too high...

The Civic has a "different" interior, the interior plastic is weird and holds dust. Car drives smooth and firm. It did develop a loud rattle over 10mph within a few miles, I guess my friend went to dealer to get it fixed. Not sure what happened...

I would say tell him to go test drive both of them on local and highway and see which he likes.

I like the front, but not rear of the sedan. Coupe looks nice!

I've got an '06 Civic EX coupe and I love it. I traded in a Protege5 and don't miss it much. The only advantage it had was excellent handling. That can be fixed though. It is quiet, still handles well enough, and gets great gas mileage. The new dash is kind of funky looking, but you come to like it. You barely have to take your eyes off the road to check your speed.

I don't see anything wrong with the Corolla either though. I think their both great commuters. I think it would boil down to price and styling. They both have excellent resale and are very reliable.

My only gripe with the S is the stick on body pieces.

As an owner of a brand new 2006 Honda Civic EX Coupe I'm a little biased but I'd defintly go with the new Civic. Your getting an excellent car. The Civic is fun to drive and will be new for longer than the current Corolla sense it will be getting a redesign soon. Rolla is right that the interior holds dust but the interior feels really upscale and the digital speedometer is excellent.

I'll have to go with the majority here and say Civic, without a doubt. I test drove one recently and was pretty impressed. Decent power, excellent stability and handling, very quiet at high speed.
