Finally, A Gas War!

CharlesW

The Rainmaker
A town 20 miles North of me has a gas war going on.
A convenience store owner made a statement that his gas prices were going to be lower than anyone else in town.
Ethhanol fuel was $2.699 at the time. He dropped his price to $2.679 and several other stations followed suit.
As of last night, his price was $2.279 and his competitors were at $2.319.
As you can imagine, he has had some real long lines of gas customers.

FWIW, I don't think I have seen a gas war for over 10 years, maybe even 20.
Sounds good to me. Now if it just travels to our area.

Sounds great to me goes to show you that they can lower the price and still make money....the ba*ta#ds :realmad:

Yes, and another body supply store. :(
Still no luck. I posted another thread about my Pontiac Customer Service experience so far.
It's here.

I hope to get there in the next few days.

I don't know where you have been, but I've been seeing a gas war for the last few years. Ever since the Gulf War I would say there has been a gas war. ;)

A few days ago a local radio station did this advertisement for $1/gal. gas. The deal was that you had to listen in so you knew when to go to the station, and you could NOT line up before the specified time. Of course, the dummies gave out the location of the station before they started the $1/gal deal, and everything went haywire...

Too bad I missed out...The cheapest places around here are $2.75/gal...Even Costco isn't that cheap I don't think...

Hey, it dropped to only $2.389 here yesterday. What a deal. The oil companies and the refineries are going to make out like bandits with this. They raise the price to $3 a gallon and then we are happy when it is only 50 cents more than it was before they started playing their games.
I did recently read an interesting gas boycott idea. Obviously a day without buying gas won't work since we have to buy it eventually, but.....
The idea was presented to pick one particular gas company and boycott them completely. The idea being that if they lose a lot of business, they will reduce their prices. Hopefully their competitors would then have to follow suit. Not a fullfledged gas war, just enough to get prices somewhat back in line.

Charles

Prices on gas will continue to drop as refineries come online and supply pressures ease. The history of these things is that the oil firms make profits, reinvest in technology, and keep finding more oil.

Silver Lexus, I sure hope that you are right. In this particuliar case i do not beleive that it is going to come down after alll the refineries are back in production. It may go down a little but it will remain high and most likely continue to go up because it is all about the money.

Charles W,

having been raised in Iowa i can honestly say that the last time i saw a gas war was in Iowa. circa the 70's. hope that you get to take advantage of the price war

Thanks, but it's 20 miles away in a town that I get to about once a year. I'm sure the gas war will be over by then.
I dislike the high gas prices like most of us, but to put it into perspective.
12,000 miles a year at 20 mpg seems pretty realistic for an average, doesn't it?
Anyway, thats 600 gallons of gas a year.
600 x $2.50 = $1500
600 x $2.00 = $1200
See what I'm getting at? The $300 difference is less than $6 a week. I probably spend more each week on Mountain Dew. When I was a drinker, I spent more than that a day on booze.
Significant? Maybe.
Going to change my lifestyle? I don't think so.
If anything has to change, I'll just give up Mountain Dew. :)

Here's a bump to your thread Charles....

today I filled up for $2.29 :punk: it almost felt good to spend only $43 to fill my truck  :stuart: :ermm:  ;) :w00t: :whistling

$2.40 a gallon for regular here in Georgia. Premium is $2.50 to $2.60.

And this in an area where supply of gas is still affected by the hurricanes...

$1.97 for Ethanol Blend, $2.07 for regular, and I think Premium is $2.17.
We use regular for the van, Premium for the GTP. Never did like to save money.:)

Charles

Edit: The Ethanol Blend prices are pretty much the same at most stations, but the regular and the Premium prices will vary as much as a nickel between various outlets.

Yes, and that's just what the oil companies are banking on. And I do mean bank.
We have all this talk about damaged drilling rigs, damaged refineries, shortages, that caused the high prices. Now when it come out that much of the damage and shortge was not 100% true, the price comes down and we are happy.
The thing is, the new lower price is from 50 cents to a dollar higher than it was a year or so ago.
It's like motor oil. The price went up back in the first Irag conflict right along with gas prices. Gas came back down, but did motor oil? Also, what does the oil supply have to do with the cost of synthetic lubricants? Natural gas is going to be much higher this year. Because of an oil shortage?
I better shut up and go wash a car.:)

Charles

Oh, I am sure that they are banking on it , in a big way.
When Exxon/Mobil is stating that they had close to a 10 billion (yes that's with a B) profits for a quarter I find it hard to belief that they had to raise the price to cover their losses... what losses :dunno

Man.... and I just put $20 bucks in last night. Oh well. This is why I only put $20 bucks in. Sooner or later it will fill the tank again. lol
