embedded sand in carpet.......

aside from scrubbing the heck out of it with a brush, what is the best solution to getting trapped sand out of a carpet?

thanks in advance

Jay

Use the back of a brush to 'beat' the carpet and bring the sand grains to the surface and then vacuum, repeat as necessary. The problem with scrubbing a carpet that has ingrained sand particles is that they are abrasive and may damage the fibres

i was going to suggest a rubber mallet, but the the brush probably works well. what ever tool you choose "beat" the floor to raise (loosen) the sand and vacuum off repeat as needed till you're happy.

Pretend you are playing a set on bongo drums and beat on the carpet. This will bring the sand to the surface where it can be vacuumed.

While singing "Beat it" :lol1:

Assuming by your screen name you are working on a Corvette...

I'd try using a very stiff brush to loosen up the sand from the base of the nap of the carpeting. You can also use compressed air, and if so, please use eye protection. The key is aggitation and a good vacuum. Lot of vacuuming too.

I tried to get one of those from PAC but it didn't ship, was kinda miffed as that was one of only a couple things I needed. Just wanted it for embedded stains, never thought about loosening sand.

While it won't work well in tight spots, I use the "beater bar"/agitator attachment that's normally used (with a canister vacuum) for household carpets. One more reason why I use an old household canister vacuum for interiors, rather than a shop vac.

Is that one of the "turbo power" ones, that works via airflow (as opposed to an electric motor)? If so, how well does it work?

I have units like that for two of our household vacuums and I'm generally disappointed with them compared to the electric powered versions. Even the smaller electric ones (roughly the same size as that appears to be) lack the power of the full size ones (which are awfully problematic in tight spots).

I've only used my DA to wet scrub carpets and not for sand removal, but wouldn't it further embed the sand into the carpet? In my head I'm imagining the weight of the machine coupled with the downward motion of the brushes doing this. Don't know though?

David, as Jeremy on Top Gear (the real one-BBC) says when in doubt.

"Give me a hammer!"

On carpet, have a rubber mallet in one hand and the vac in the other, watch the grains jump up from down in the mat of the carpet, and vac, vac, vac.

It works.

DaGonz- Encouraged by your post, I played around a bit more with "turbo style" attachments and sure enough, they can work very well if powered by sufficient airflow. Thanks for prompting me to give 'em some more consideration.

this may not be somthing you want to invest in, but i use a Mytee HP60 and have not found dirt or stain that can stand up to it yet.
