EF Citrus Engine Degreaser -- I've fallen in love!

This was my weekend to begin cleaning/detailing the Jag engine after a long hard winter. Fortunately, David and Autopia Car Care provided super-fast service, so that my order of EF Citrus Engine Degreaser (ordered Tuesday night) arrived Friday.

For my test, I chose this spot, covered with this tarry, greasy mass of goo:

(By the way, I haven't yet figured out how to intersperse text and pix in a single post, so this will be multiple posts.)

Previously, I had tried Gunk and Engine Brite, as well as Simple Green. None of those made a dent in the goo-mass. This time, I applied a few spritzes of EF Citrus Engine Degreaser, and about 1 minute later, the degreaser had done some sort of miracle that caused the mass to begin peeling away from the metal. It’s most noticeable on the shiny metal piece on the right:

With a few more sprays and no more than 10 minutes of relatively easy effort, I discovered nice shiny metal had been hiding under there all along! Admittedly, I need to do more polishing on the metal parts, and get down to the tiny-brush-and-Qtip level of detailing, but this product got the bulk of the work done with very little time or effort.

And, in case you aren’t sufficiently grossed out, here’s the gunk that came off.

At that point, I put away all my other cleaners and used EF Citrus Engine Degreaser for the whole engine bay. It was very effective on just about every section. (That's a bit of an understatement; I want to say it was a "miracle," but I know we're urged not to be too enthusiastic. :D ) The only difficulty was on a couple of spots on the lower suspension that had hard, dry, baked-on grease/oil; for those spots, brake parts cleaner was a good supplement.

By the way, the degreaser even has a nice citrus smell too.

My evaluation? David, send me a gallon next time! I love this stuff.

Edit: I have some EFHI and Megs APC+ on order too. Once I get a chance to try them, I'll try to make some comparisons in the Reviews forum.

Yeah, but all the stuff I've tried in the past (Orange Blast, Simple Green, Gunk & other degreasers) has made a "difference." To me, what was most remarkable about EF CED is the greater ease of use -- less elbow grease required. It really is as if the grease just sort of fell away. 'Zounds!

To do this, you have to upload the pictures in the gallery one at a time and use the URL instead of attaching.

AHA! Whattaguy!! I'd been keeping them in my own directory, figuring Autopia doesn't need to be cluttered with my little in-progress shots. Thanks, Accumulator. :up

You probably won't find APC+ to be the best degreaser. It's good, though. But they make a product just for degreasing. The nice thing about APC+ is that it is also excellent on carpets and vinyl and upholstery and tires and all sorts of other stuff. If you want it to bust off crud like that, Meg's Super Degreaser, or maybe All Purpose Cleaner/Degreaser is probably better.

That gook you removed is insulation for the expansion valve, assuming your series 1 is the same as my s111. Therefore you should reinsulate if the A/C is to work properly, Still it will look a whole lot better (and maybe even work better) with brand new insulation. Good luck w/ the restoraton

See now ... There's another good reason why it would be really nice if I knew half as much about mechanicals as I do about detailing. :( So ... it's an expansion valve, eh? Thanks! That sounds ever-so-much-more impressive than "thingymabob." Yeah, I suspected some of the base part was intentional; but it seemed that lots of gunk had accumulated, and in my last Concours every judge said it needed to go. Now .. I just need to know where to find/buy the insulation I need. Jag dealer? Auto parts? If you want to PM me (to avoid cluttering the board), I'd appreciate it.

Now ... I think the restoration part is pretty well done; at this point, I'm just getting ready for Apr 26 Concours. You might want to check out my pix in the gallery or this thread: http://www.autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21268

Great to have another Jag owner here! :up

Nope. None at all. And because I was fearful of getting water on electrical parts [there are LOTS of exposed wires and connections in a '75 Jag!], I simply rinsed with a spray bottle of water and wiped down with wet rag.

ThanX, Lynn...I'll have too check it out. I try too keep it from getting really funky, but I have alot of metal under my hood. I've seen some products really discolor metal and powdercoating. I'm very cautious about engine cleaners.

PEACE
