Does new car produce more brake dust??

I just got a new MDX 3 days ago. The rotors were a bit rusted since the car was parked outside and hasn't been moved for a month. My question is does new cars produce more brake dust than usual for a while because of the rust on the rotors and the new brake pads??? It's not as much as Volvos or other German brand cars but it's more than I think it would be.

Its actually new brake pads, and you'll find the same when you get your first brake change done. Once the pads and rotors seat then the dust will die down dramatically.

Congrats on the new truck (car...trucklet, I can't decide what to call the crossover type vehicles...)

I agree that most of it has to do with the brake pads. My Integra never has had a brake dust problem even when it was new. I use ceramic pads now and they dust even less, if that is possible. I got a sample of this Rim Ice stuff that is supposed to do something with the static charge of the wheel and actually repel brake dust, but I haven't had a good car to test it properly on. Products do exist that say they help limit brake dust attraction though. That might help if the problem persists.

I used a damped towel to wipe my wheels yesterday and it's dirty today already :o. Thanks for the quick reply, I thought my MDX produce more brake dust than the other MDXs does which will freak me out if it's true :scared

Just keep the wheels washed a lot or you will be like a million others in here asking how to get imbedded brake dust out of the wheels. Also watch the damp rag .. you will scratch the clear on the wheels.

Opps :D, almost forgot about that. How long does the "new brake pad" dust last?? I don't want to go out and wipe my rims everyday.

I find that some Hondas produce massive amounts of brake dust, almost rivaling BMW. My sister has an Accord V6 that'll look like the wheels were powdercoated within a matter of days of normal driving. If it doesn't die down, all I can suggest is put on a coat of sealant on the wheels and keep up with cleaning them.

Hmmmm... That's funny, because my '99 Accord doesn't have that problem and neither did my '90 Accord. I wonder if its something about the brake pads on the V6 or something.

All I know is that the 350Z has to be the worst car for brake dust I've ever worked on. The wheels on this Z I take care of look gunmetal every single time I pick it up. In the summer I take care of it once a week and it always looks terrible. Most Z owners I've talked to say the same thing. I'm hoping to try this Rim Ice stuff on his wheels once the weather gets better.

Here's a picture of the front wheel. I don't believe Honda uses different brakes or pads on the front. This was taken after two days of driving, so they'll get dirtier. Keep in mind these are the machined aluminum wheels.

Jngr, No but it might have something to do with the V6 model being more front heavy actually...maybe...I dunno lol

I found that if the brakes are going to settle down its usually within 1000 miles. My Lexus was like that also, now they hardly dust at all.

I find Klasse works great on the wheels, only reason I'm still keeping it around. Its been 4 months since I applied one coat AIO one coat SG to the wheels and the brake dust and road grime releases with a hose.

That's nothing... Check out the wheels on this Z. They don't look too bad until you see the pictures after I cleaned them. They are supposed to be silver. They look like that every single week too. Front and back. I've never seen such bad brake dust. I've been told by others that he rides them pretty hard even though the owner denies it. Time to switch to ceramic for this guy. lol

I use Klasse on my wheels too. I don't find that I need it on the Integra since brake dust is such a non-issue, but for my winter wheels it is good to help keep them cleaner looking with all the crud that sprays all over them. Gotta love Klasse. :bigups

Woah, those Z rims are incredibly dirty, they look like they come like that! I'll have to agree with you on the Klasse, I applied Klasse on those wheels about two weeks ago and so far it seems to be working well. I'll have to get a picture of the wheel clean for a comparison. :up

Wait till you own a mercedes... The stock pads create sooo

much dust. I'm currently wiping them down with a MF towel

every 2 days or so. When these pads go out, I'm definately

getting some porterfields to elimate the dust.

No, the rust will not do that it is almost exclusively the brake pads. I have Raybestos Quiet Stops (ceramic) on my Cobra and have little to no dust, even after a full day of driving. Get a set of Hawk streets (metallic) and you'll see lots of dust...much better and more reliable braking, but lots of dust.

I was going to go with the Raybestos Brute Stops (almost the same as Hawks), but my guy said the Quiet Stop ceramic pads were fine for street use...he's right, and I get no brake dust...

Mintex and Axxis make dustless pads. I use them on my 00 M5.

They have a co efficiant of friction of .03 like a stock pad with no dust. Great mod for an autopia freak!

My honda has brake dust like crazy too, only after maybe 100 miles or so........
