Computer Geeks Unite! Check this out! Tweak your internet connection to go faster

Spilchy the easiest way is to go to http://www.broadbandreports.com/tools (same site) and run the "tweak test" near the bottom. It will analyze your connection and suggest any changes you might need. If you need changes they'll recommend the free "Dr. TCP" program. Its tiny and you can make the right adjustments with it. Its definitely THE place to go to get your connection tested and tweaked!

That's what I did! And what I posted is what they recommended! I'm not sure how to calculate the RWIN.

I tried the test, it's in a gray box, thing is, are the results supposed to ppop up in the box also? I wait and wait after hitting the results button. Applet is displayed

What exactly do the results look like?

After you hit the results button, you are taken to another screen where you need to fill in the information they ask for in those drop down boxes for Service, Speed, Operating System, Connection

When you do, you get a huge read out with some suggestions. Mine looks like this:

Your Tweakable Settings:

Receive Window (RWIN): 65535

Window Scaling: off

Path MTU Discovery: ON

RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF

RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF

Selective Acks: ON

MSS requested: 1460

TTL: unknown

TTL remaining: 113

Test 146000 byte download

Actual data bytes sent: 146000

Actual data packets: 100

Max packet sent (MTU): 1500

Max packet recd (MTU): 1500

Retransmitted data packets: 0

sacks you sent: 1

pushed data pkts: 5

data transmit time: 0.246 secs

our max idletime: 46.3 ms

transfer rate: 234723 bytes/sec

transfer rate: 1877 kbits/sec

This is not a speed test!

transfer efficiency: 100%

I just switched to DSL (broadband) today. I have been playing around with it a bit. As of now I'm not that impressed with it.

9 times out of 10 I connect to dial up at 52000bps which is fast for dial up. I feel DSL isn't much faster, I'm kinda ticked.

dsl is kinda a waste of $$ i agree

that connection tweak will provide very marginal improvements, if any at all

best thing you can do is lower your internet cache to like 1mb, block popups, 512MB+ RAM, get 3mbps+ internet, and be done with it

That's what I did :up

I also installed SpywareBlaster and a hosts file

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Currently I am experiencing a 451.5 KB/sec transfer rate.

I want MORE! :p

Comcast cable is coming today to swap out my 4 year old modem for a new one. This thing is an ancient and ugly RCA modem. They have new black, sleek Motorola modems :up

I'm on dial up, I highly doubt anything other than switching to broadband will help me.

If you are like me, on the blazing fast 56M(milli)bits connection, you MUST use Opera for browser. It is the fastest, specially noticeable in dual up, and another speed benefit is that it doesn't refresh the pages when you press back. Autopia has recently started to enforce refresh with every click (even back) so it may not help you here, but anywhere else that feature is invaluable.

When I was in Mexico, I walked past an Internet cafe. I popped in just to see and spoke to the owner. He showed me his Internet connection. Every computer was hooked up to a server SHARING a 56k connection!

At least the people have access :up

Not that I have a problem with my connection speed or anything (5,000 down - 785 up) but I went to the broadband site posted previously to check out the tweak test and mind came up "Looking Good!" I guess I'm already getting all that's offered. :D

I ran a SBC Yahoo speed test for DSL and got these results:

Download 476.71Kbps

Upload 543.55Kbps

I just switched to DSL yesterday, how do these results look?

Are they decent numbers? I know nothing about DSL.

Your download speed : 6292468 bps, or 6144 kbps.

A 768.1 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 492287 bps, or 480 kbps.

Internet cafes are quite popular.... I was thinking about opening one in my hometown, but there are a few already. Maybe I should and offer the shiniest computers in town... :p

DSL and cable are on the rise, but still low availability. As consolation, the dial-up service connects usually at 52 kps.... and with Opera only graphics heavy windows take long. But for big downloads, the corporate network helps me.... ;)
