Cleaning cloth seats- advice?

I have a 1990 Mustang with an already clean set of seats with some minor blemishes....would folex carpet cleaner and a nice brush be all the tools I would require?

To clean fabric seats and obtain the desired outcome;

• Use an upholstery brush to loosen dust and fibres

• Vacuum to remove loose dust etc

• Identify the material/fabric you are working with

• Identify the type of stain and / or soiling

• Use an appropriate pre-spray and allow sufficient time to work

• Use an enzyme type cleaner to remove odours

• For stains, first blot to remove any liquid and then use an appropriate stain remover

• Use a heated water extraction machine to remove excess moisture

• Rinse with clean water

• Dry thoroughly

• Apply a fabric protector



Use a high-quality cleaner, formulated without strong solvents and one that has a pH value between 4 and 10 (neither strongly acidic nor overtly alkaline).

Get a small Kiwi shoe brush.

They don't look all that bad! I would highly suggest using either and extractor or foam cleaner for these seats. Avoid over-saturation. Make sure to use a towel to lift away any dampness and lifted soiling.

David, no they arent awfully bad at all. The OCD in me just wants to get them as perfect as possibly can be without doing a re-upholstery.



I've never used an extractor and no clue how they work (sure I can figure it out) I have a RIDGID shop vac tho?Do I need a specific soap/shampoo? Also what foam cleaner?

You can also try using them down with a damp cloth. You'd be amazed with how much soiling will lift away by doing this.

I would also consider treating them with a good coat of Fabric Protectant too after cleaning/drying.



From the looks of it, the interior of the Fox Body is extremely clean and appears to have low mileage. Seat belts are like new. Got any more pics??

I will buy the product your recommended above (you've been a great help in the past as well so I appreciate it very much) Here is what I did this past summer but I sort of felt as if I could have done more. Sprayed down with FOLEX, agitated with a brush (heavily) than I vacuumed the residue up with the shop vac I have.



The car took me a long time to find I wouldn't call it low mileage by any means , it has 79K miles on it. The car is as stock as you can possibly get which is unusual for a fox but its expected of a 75 year old owner- long story short, the original owner was a young man that bought it brand new in 1990 and unfortunately, in 1993 he was killed in an accident....his father sold me the car. Here are some before and afters mostly of the engine bay area.

I did pay a bit over 6K for it- everything is more here in Canada but I got a deal for what she is. Air silencer was removed about three weeks ago lol! The pony wheels you're referring to were made available on 91+ models if I am correct. I was gonna go with some carpeted mats in the same color from a company called late mode resto. Yes, 1990 was the first year for the crappy looking steering wheel with the air bag.

Yup, that crappy non-tilt wheel was surely a set back.



I noticed all that undercoating in the inner fenders. I hate that stuff. Would be great to get a high temp steamer to blast it away.

That stuff is everywhere man, I cleaned the engine bay with mineral spirits. Maybe your idea is quicker than me rubbing....hmm.



Any special instructions on using that 3d cleaner?

Yes quicker, but a high temp steamer washer can be pretty pricey too!

I would 1st dry brush the seats loosening up any topical dirt. Then, if you have it, blow down with compressed air and then vacuum. Then, shake the aerosol can well. Spray it onto the seat (1 section at a time), brush gently and then final towel dry very well. Should be all there is to it.

Nice n easy- last but not least: are there any specific brushes you would recommend for this job?

Something that isn't too stiff, but not too soft. Maybe something like this:

I wouldn't necessarily say you need to go out and buy a new brush. What do you have? It might work?

I've got from tooth brushes, an upholstery brush attachment that came with my RIDGID vac car kit and than I have a softer sided brush, actually gentle enough for washing your hands with to remove some heavier grime....
