Black Car Recommendations

What do you guys recommend for black? Looking at detailing a black 04 Acura TL this weekend that has fine scratches.

I should have mentioned that I plan to apply with a PC. Advice on what product/pad combo's is apreciated!

I start out a little more agressively than most folks. I've found that if you have swirls and marring, it tends to be a waste of time to start in any other way. You aren't going to hurt anything with a pc and the products and procedure I recommend below.

Clay the car first if it needs it . Then here you go:

1. Meguiar’s #83 DACP, cutting pad, pc at 5.5, medium pressure, work the product until it is almost dry.

2. Repeat if necessary. (Or repeat using a polishing pad.)

3. Meguiar’s #82 Swirl Free Polish, polishing pad , pc at 5, medium pressure, work until almost dry, but not as dry as DACP.

4. NXT, polishing pad or finishing pad, pc at 3, light pressure, work only to insure full covering.

5. Repeat with NXT after 24 hours.

Remove all products with a microfiber polishing cloth. It makes the job a whole lot easier. I've messed with other products, but I always seem to go back to Mequiar's. NXT looks darned good on black by itself or if you choose you can top it with a carnauba -- S100 or Meguiar's #16.

I know black. See my signature. Been "in black" since 1977.

Good luck!

I drive a black BMW and I use the following

Poorboys
SSR2.5 with a cutting pad.
SSR1 with a cutting pad.
P-w-C polish pad.
Paste wax by hand

The finish was the best that I have seen on the car

I like the look of Poorboys products on black. EX followed by Natty Wax is a sweet combo as the Natty's will add a little warmth to the black.

Although I tend to prefer Meguiar's products, I really like BLACKFIRE too. It's just a little harder to use. It seems to have a little more "pop" on black than NXT.

I still think that my original suggestion would be a good start. After you have had success with one product line, you can "play" with the rest. :D

What do you have on hand? If going with Meguiar's, give #80 a shot it gets the job done and won't need a follow-up like DACP would. But, you just might ned DACP if the stuff is deep.

I'd go with the following

Poorboy's SSR2.5
Clearkote Vanilla Moose
Clearkote Carnauba Moose Wax

Very wet look with excellent durability.

Thanks guys! All good info.

tguil: I have these products, so I'll give your method a try. I tried out the NXT products (spray/liquid wax), and they seem to be a good value. It will be interesting to see how they hold up.

Does the #83 actually remove scratches or hide them? I have Menzerna IP, but hate to use something that strong on a new car. Also have a rotary, but kind of hate to use that on a new car too.

Scott P: Don't have these products (yet), but keep hearing a lot of good things about them. I think I'm going to order them when some of my other supplies start to dwindle. I currently have 4 floor standing cabenits filled to the max with wax, glaze, polish, compound, and everything between. So far, I like Klasse, Menzerna, and Blackfire the best, but haven't tried out PoorBoys, Top of the Line, ClearKote, and a few others that I keep hearding good things about.

What kind of pads are you using?
I use Edge2000 white for polish and glaze
Mequires red and Orange Power pads aggressive polish/compound

I typically wax by hand.

I'm amazed at some of the results that I see on this site. Really good stuff!

I have all of the Menzerna products except the FMJ sealer. Menzerna products have been awesome in my experience. I still have a lot to learn on what combination of products, pads, etc... to use to obtain the best results. Learning A LOT on this site. Some of the results I've seen just blow me away, especially on black cars.

mgm...I would use a polishing pad for SSR2.5 and Vanilla Moose. I apply Carnauba Moose Wax by hand with a foam applicator.

My favorite combo on black is FP2 with FMJ. I just did mine this weekend, looks great.
FMJ is a great product, looks veeeeery good on black.

For my black vehicles"
1. wash/clay
2. SSR 2.5 w/cutting pad (rotary)
3. VM or SSR1 w/polishing pad (PC)
4. EX-P w/finishing pad (PC)
5. Ex-P hand application
6. Natty's Paste Wax Topper Coat

Man it seems like a lot of work when you write it all down.

tguil: Tried your method on the hood, roof, and trunk last night. I'm pretty happy with the results. Between steps 2 and 3, I applied a coat of 3M imperial hand glaze. Still need to apply the 2nd coat of NXT tonight. There are still a few minor surface scratches, but I'd say 95% of what was there before has been removed. I used a meguires red pad to apply the #83 DACP, and a white polish pad for #82 and the 3M IHG -applied the NXT by hand. If time permits, I'll snap a photo on the digital. Is there a trick to posting pictures, or can you simply copy/paste them?

Thanks to everyone for all of the tips & suggesstions. I need to add a few supplies to the arsonal to try out a few of the other methods suggessted, but I really appreciate the input and feel like I'm learning a lot.

I'll try to remember taking a few pics tonight. I just figured out how to resize/post/etc... We stripped off the NXT wax, and polished/sealed with blackfire. It looks REALLY impressive. Yes, I know it's a brand new car, but trust me the dealership didn't have it looking anything close to where it is today.
