I just ordered a PC 7424XP yesterday and need to get water spots etc. off of my Black 96' Corvette.I also included Meguiars Ultimate Compound to do the job. Is this the best cleaner to use in this application?

Thanx

All depends on the water spots and if they've etched deep into the paint. What have you tried so far?

I havn't tried a whole lot I did try some Meguiars Scratch Out by hand and seemed to work a little.I'm new to the Electric Polisher thing.I've always done it by hand.I'm going to learn all I can.If it helps you can't feel the water spots. just see them.I don't believe they are too bad.I bought the 96' in 05' Prestine shape, garage kept always etc. just the paint needs a good detailing. Some TLC.

If you can feel them than they may be above surface water spots. I'd try claying first to see if that has an effect on them.

Since the clear on Corvettes tends to be very hard, Ultimate Compound on the PC with an orange LC pad should be a good place to start if the spots have etched below the surface. M105 would be another good option

What pads did you get with the machine? You will also want to follow up the Ultimate Compound with some M205 or similar polish.

Edit: Sorry, I misread your post, but claying first will still be something you will want to do.

My Pads are the LC Cyan, Crimson & Tangerine I do need to get some M205.

I should get my stuff this Monday.Hope it doesn't rain.I'll keep ya'll posted on my results.

Thanx Guys

Vinegar is an acid. Typically some of the water spots contain minerals. As an acid, vinegar just dissolves those minerals and thus removes the spot.

The point I was trying to make is that if the water spot has actually etched into the clear the only way to remove it is by the means of polishing.Yes vinegar can remove minerals but you may still be left with an etching. ;)

Hard water spots on a Corvette can be a very difficult thing. Sometimes you may have to wetsand to get it looking good. Best of luck.

I have been a detailer for 25 years. The quickest and most effective hard water removal is hydroflouric acid.Spray on wet cool surface dwell for 90 seconds rinse and all hard water is gone.Be careful on glass as the acid will etch the glass. It is commonly known as aluminum brightener.Remember to wear gloves, goggles and respirator as this is a very nasty chemical. If you buy wire wheel cleaner at your local auto parts store read the label and look for hydrophlouric acid. This dilution generally will work.

If you buy concentrate at a janitor supply house dilute two ounces with 30 ounces of water.

Hard water searches for mineral sites to attach itself to on any surface. When it attaches to automotive paint and glass it forms a chemical bond and becomes a part of the surface. You have to break the chemical bond.Buffing and claying and yes also vinegar, on REAL HARD WATER, are a dream ,and a nightmare.Try it out and you will see what i am saying.Hard water will be gone in minutes not hours.

One more thing on glass.Try a small area and time out 60 seconds first and observe result. If not effective move up to 90 seconds detailman.Nine out of ten time the paint is not etched by the hard water so compounding will not be necessary, but compunding if it comes to that you had better know what you are doing or you WILL regret it "I will never leave wax in your Cracks "
