Hey guys... just got my first car

2003 Audi A4 - Black on Black

I was wondering what you guys recommend as far as car washing shampoo and wax and how often to use each.

Thanks

John

I like Meguiars #00, AutoInt's "C", and FK1's Green car wash. They are all very good with high lubricity. The #00 can be kind of expensive though as they only offer it in 16 oz.

JWinner, I highly recommend Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo.

If you like suds don't buy this. It achieves results that other shampoos struggle with, without high suds.

It feels slick to apply to the paint surface and has stronger cleaners (enzymes, I believe) than any shampoo I've tried. It also leaves the finish ultra-glossy due to the extra glossing agents in the formula.

Everyone (including myself) that I know thats tried it thought it felt weird at first without all the suds. When they finished they couldn't believe how clean and glossy the paint looked.

Autopia shop currently has it in its Garage Sale at 40% off!

For OTC car washes I prefer NXT and EO Wet is pretty good too. I've not tried any of the "boutique" brands yet but a lot of good things are said about 1Z Perls and Poorboys Super Slick and Suds.

As far as waxes, I use a sealant, plus I don't have a black car so I wouldn't be much help other than reciting what I've read. Doing a search and reading the reviews might help a lot and I'm sure someone will chime in with a better answer, but remember, surface prep is the most important thing before you apply a wax or sealant. Be sure to check out the learn section too, there's a lot of good stuff there.

i use the poorboys and it suds up great and the suds never go away. Ive used the 4* carwash concentrate and im getting used to it but i have also used their wash n wax and i didnt like that much. I hear the NXT wash is pretty good

There are so many good shampoos out there that I suggest trying a bunch for yourself before taking someone elses word for it.

Personally...I like:

Meg's Gold Class and NXT

Zaino Z7

P21S

JWinner182- Welcome to Autopia! Fellow Audi owner here.

I like Griot's Car Wash ($30/gallon + ship), preferably used with a foamgun. If you haven't already seen my Wash Technique you might want to check it out.

The wax (or LSP, "Last Step Product" as we refer to it here) is a matter of personal preference. I like 4-Star UPP or Meguiar's #16. Pinnacle Souveran looks better but doesn't last very long.

How often? Wash when it's dirty and wax before you think you need to.

I'm pretty sure Griot's has bumped the price to $40 + S/H so that gallons gonna set you back $50 by the time it touches down. :(

I think we've been saying too many good things about it and Richie decided to be bold with his pricing. Regardless, still a fine product as are many other choices we have.

I am anxious to try the new PB shampoo. That's about the only wash I haven't tried. :p

Many European car wash manufacturers take the view that rinsing the surface, more than washing alone ensures cleaning efficiency, so the washing process is more efficient using a cleaning agent that contains an anionic (very low foaming agent) than one that produces lots of suds

how does NXt wash compares to meguiars #00 wash?

It's no contest. I like NXT much better than Gold Class, but IMO, #00 is in a different league. The suds are nice and small and tight, and will last FOREVER(by the time I'm doing drying the car, I still have suds in the driveway from the spillover when filling up the bucket). It has very high lubricity, and is a no frills wash. It rinses clean and quickly, but it can be pretty expensive. Which is why I like the AutoInt and FK1 washes, they are both very similar to #00, but they both can be bought by the gallon.

Tom P. - Hadn't seen the price increase, they quit sending me catalogs on a regular basis after I returned a bunch of stuff (at their guy's suggestion  ). Yeah, might have to try the PB stuff...$50/gallon is getting up there. I oughta see how the shipping is calculated (I buy this stuff in multi-gallon lots) and give it some thought.

Edit: Just checked the PB website, looks like they're gonna want $48.50/gallon or so shipped for their wash too.
