As of August 2007, what is consensus on the BEST type of wash mitt?

So:

Brand new car (black paint), ready for its first ever wash. I've come to accept the fact that the paint will probably never be this pristine again, no matter what. Still, that wont stop me from washing it with the best equipment available on the maket.

Right now, I'm just looking for the absolute, best wash mitt available; one that will clean the car with least amount of swirl-creation. Some tend to favor the Sheepskin mitts, other the Microfiber.

What the word in todays with today car washing enthusiasts?

Thanks.

been using these for years with no problems and they're my wash mitt of choice (sm arnold), and it doesn't have the thumb on it which i also like...

I honestly don't know why they would scare you. I've posted results. They simply work and cost less than pretty much any other quality wash tool.

Another vote for the Edge Schmitt, get the white and yellow one. Second choice is the MF sponge with the 2" long dred lock looking side - they're at Target.

There is no absolute consensus - with Sheepskins, ShMitts, Grout Sponges, MF Mitts, and Boars Hair brushes all having their advocates.

Having said that, it would appear from the times that threads like this come up, that a clear plurality if not outright majority (over 50%) favor sheepskins.

My vote FWIW is a plush Sheepskin as they have the best combination of: a) ability to hold shampoo/suds; b) softness/ resistance to marring; 3) durability; and 4) ability to release grit/dirt.

The Shmitt has received pretty good reviews but there have been questions raised as to its durability. Nonetheless, I would rank it a close 2nd behind Sheepskin in preferrence.

MF Mitts, Boars Hair Brushes, and Grout Sponges all have significant questions IMO regarding whether they resist marring and/or have the ability to release grit effectively. They are all very durable, easy to clean and have excellent cleaning ability though.

+1

Dirt and rough washing implements = major source of scratches & swirls. A soft sudsy sheepskin mitt releases grit/dirt extremely well. With a two bucket method with ONR and no gritguard, my rinse bucket has all the grit and the ONR pail stays clean.

For me, the sheepskin mitt is only half the equation. If you have a black car (and I have two). You should seriously invest in a foam gun. I was given this great advice from Accumulator and it has changed my approach completely. I DO NOT cause any additional marring thanks to the ultra slick foam created by the gun. With sixteen thousand posts, I figured he knows what he's talking about and so should you!
