So you barely let each coat dry and you wet sand after each layer eh?

So what your saying is even if it IS a little too thick and there is a defect with orange peel or if it is too thick, you can fix it by sanding.

Must of took a LONG time to spray that huge area with those tiny cans.......

Talk about great before and after pictures - WOW

You are being very modest with your skills, simply stunning work.

I really hope you got the insurance quote BEFORE doing all of that work so that it would be cheaper until they see the car again? Or did they not inspect it?

Amazing job . . . let me know if you start teaching classes :D

DeCopp, yes I removed the window tint. It was one of those cheapo jobs and everthing but the windshield had it. The real nightmare was the rear window with the defroster grid. I bought some tint remover, but honestly, I think it was just a soap mixture. I started on the back window and it was about 50F outside, 7 hours later when I finished, there was over 4 inches of snow on the roof (in the driveway). Being 6ft and about 270lbs, I thought I was gonna have to call for the jaws of life to get me out of the back seat! Defroster still works though, a major triumph in my book, especially when I discovered after the fact that the back window is actually plastic, not glass. Fortunately, I had only worked about 3 square inches of back window with steel wool and Zaino glass polish to remove really tough water spots! A lot of elbow grease later I salvaged the steel-wooled spot, but sure gave me a sinking feeling when I first saw it!

joed1228, each coat of paint was allowed to dry completely before wet-sanding. Remember, I used laquer, so it only took about 1-2 hours to flash, even in 40F weather. Laquer is very forgiving, so it was easy to wet-sand with 1500 wet-or-dry paper between each coat. Easy, but required a lot of patience, however, I think my days as a safe-cracker are over due to the terrific callous formations on my finger tips.

puterbum, my car insurance company has never seen any of my cars, unless of course they have to work a claim on them. My original intent was to buy a beater and just make it acceptable so we only had to get liability insurance. I think I went too overboard for that, so now we're paying full coverage. The good news is that there is no extra charge until my son turns 16 and gets his actual drivers license, which is in August. In the meantime, on his learner's permit and on his soon (next week) to be obtained school permit, there is no extra charge due to his age. Go figger?

I'm fairly handy with Photoshop, but not that good! Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. My wife always comes home from work with a comment like that, such as "did you get the dishes and laundry done today or did you play in the driveway all day?". Well dear, here's some photos of what I got done! BTW, having tried that just the other night, I highly recommend against it unless you have readily available alternate housing available!

DLW set a cot up in the garage for those long wet sanding nights. LOL.

How did you get the paint to match? DId yougive them the original paint code?

Might try this on a large scratched door panel on GF blazer some boring weekend.

Great job dlw :bow

Want to come over and paint my dad's car? :D Its red, 1991 with less than 60K on it. Well probably a project I will try soon (within 5 years.)

Again, amazing before and afters!

Guess My Name, yep, just took the original paint code off the door jam. It's called Black Pearl (black w/very small gold flecks). Since I just painted the horizonal surfaces that were damaged, matching was not a big problem. An "expert" could tell that the new paint isn't quite exact. Fortunately, my son and his buddies are not "experts" (well, don't ask them). It actually would have been better if the original color was straight black. If the car works out well, I'll probably repaint the whole thing next winter anyway. I've actually got a real good compressor, paint gun, etc. This was just supposed to be a "quick patch" fix-up. As usual, a quick fix for me is like being a "little pregnant", just doesn't seem to happen. God I love this kind of stuff!
