wheel brush?

What is everyone using to get the tough brake dust off? The wheel brushes in the store are not tough enough and the bristles are not hard. What about online? I got megs wheel brightner coming and i guess i need a tough brush to really scrub my factory g35 wheels.

I used to like the Meguiars Wheel brush (Yellow Spoke type) but they discontinued it. I got a OXO Spoke brush from AutoGeek and it has the hard bristles at the tip and the softer brush near the base. It seems to work really well.

Would have liked to be able to get more of the Megs brush.

nothing similar? I guess i will look at the oxo spoke brush. I wish i could use a SS brush on it, that has really hard bristles but would ruin the wheel. btw what does the megs wheel brush look like that they discontinued? Did it have hard bristles?

The EZ Detail Brush is just what your vehicle needs to get totally clean right down to the tiniest details.

^^^ +1 EZ Auto Brush works on all wheels and even engine compartments. Just be careful when you pull it towards you, the grime slings back and splatters all over.

Megs looks like a long tapered brush (like a long cone) with solft bristles. The OXO has hard bristles at the tip and soft ones for the main body of the cone.

Just like with the paint on the rest of your car, abrasive wash media will scratch your wheels. What you need is to chemically dissolve that brake dust (the Meg's WB will do that, please be careful with that product it can be dangerous), then polish and seal the wheels and regularly clean them to keep the brake dust from etching in. A "tough" brush is going to leave marring all over your wheels.

The megs wb says up to 4:1, what do I do it at? So any brush is fine after whee brightner dissolves it or should i get the OXO or EZ auto brush?

We sell Laitner brushes now which I find great. I was using them before carrying them and is the reason I got them in.

The funniest thing is, that even the most caked on brake dust, seems to come right off with a Magic Eraser. Then I just rinse and put some OOS on it.

I'm not arguing with you, but I guess it depends on what we're talking about, I've had etched in brake dust on the backs of wheels that nothing was touching except acid. I can see the ME taking stuff off the smooth part of the wheel if it hasn't been there for years.

I use the Magic Eraser for a lot of stuff, but just an FYI for those thinking about using one, they can leave marring on a painted surface.

Try it before you knock it. We did a car (expedition) that had 78000 miles on it and had never been washed. Took about 20 minutes per wheel, but all came off with the Magic Eraser. Used about 5 of them to do that car.

We are talking about the wheels here, not the paint.

Yeah, but the wheels are painted! (usually). And I have tried ME on wheels, with limited success. I was working on the backs, cleaning up summer wheels, worked pretty well on the flat surfaces, but not in the nooks and crannies, and these wheels were pretty well maintained. I guess I haven't had to use a ME on the front of any of my wheels.

Some wheels or covers are painted (or partially painted). Not arguing, just stating an FYI for someone reading this thread that isn't familiar with the ME's.

The OXO brush is very stiff at the tip. I would recommend care on any surface with it. The Meg's brush was basically soft all the way through.

I really would suggest a liquid wheel cleaner with great care in using it. I understand your situation with brake dust in the tough areas but I would be inclined to try numerous gentle approaches rather than one "get it all" shot.

Could you use a good all purpose cleaner and a toothbrush in the tough areas??

I drive a sports car and the Mothers wheel brush gets all that excess break dust just fine. Also costs around $5 :)
