Hi all, I've been lurking around here for some insight on car care, and now decided I would like to get a pc7424.

Have some questions for a beginner if anyone could help

1. What size backing plate and pads would be best for a beginner?

2. What color pads do you commonly use to detail a car that is in good condition?

3. I have an 06 Durango (black) that has seen wax but not as much as it should, i recently waxed it but it still has a haziness to it, would Ultimate Compound used with the pc take care of that? Or do you recommend something else that I could get locally?

After this step would i apply wax for a finish? What pads would you use with these products?

Sorry for the long post, just trying to get what i need without getting the wrong products.

Thanks,

Spud

Welcome to Autopia, spud! :)

For the PC, I'd stick with 4" pads for tighter areas and 5.5" pads for the rest. Any larger tends to bog down the PC.

For LC Pads, you'll probably want a few Orange (moderate correction), White (light correction) and Black (finishing) pads. After your polishing steps, you would apply your LSP (last step products) which could be a sealant, wax, or both.

get a 5" backing plate and you'll be able to use both 5.5" and 6.5" pads and also a 3.5" backing plate for 4" pads...

3.5" Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate- porter cable 7424XP hook and loop backing plate 3.5 inch.

lake country 5 inch backing plate, 5 inch backin plate, 5 inch hook and loop backing plate

get at least three white and a few orange pads (like microfiber towels, one can never have enough of them)...

try picking up some megs swirlx (do a test spot) and use it with the white pad and see where that gets you (it's available OTC at walmart for about $7). least aggressive approach first and then move up in aggressiveness as needed (let us know how it works out)...

p.s. :welcome !

thanks I'll let you know how it turns out.

I'm still looking into what I want to buy as far as polisher.

Autopia car care has the Ultimate detailing machine on sale and I'm not sure which would be better for me the UDM or the 7424.

Has anyone purchased from that website as I heard it's not the same as this one

I got a PC, and wish I had known about the flex, or just gotten a rotary and learned.... From what I've read the PC still has a place in the toolkit, so no money wasted anyways.

The 6.5" pads suck, the 5.5" pad will still bog down on some angles / lines of the car unless its on speed 6 and even then it will bog in certain spots making them really hard to polish.

The 4" pads feel MUCH smaller then the 5.5" in regards to doing a lot of area, the 4" pads also make the PC a little more squirly to control, the PC wants to dance around a lot more with 4" then 5.5".

My .02 from doing my whole car yesterday with my PC!

Buy the most powerful model you can affor. Get a Flex if you can afford that. Or get one of the newer "XP" generation machines. IIRC the UDM is one of those new-generation models.

Seriously, the regular ol' PC 7424 is *barely* adequate for this stuff.
