Rotary practise (lots of pictures)

Ok, I practised how to use rotary today to my grandfather's old car, which is actually horrible

shape. I have newer used rotary, just tested it couple of times after I bought it last summer. I actually haven't used any machine to polish, so this is fairly new territory to me. I also have

Bosch Random Orbital, that i bought about the same time as rotary, but I haven't used it either.

You may think why the hell I don't use them, so the answer is that I traded my ex-car to a new one in the late summer, and I thought that I wouldn't polish my new car until next spring.

But here's today's story. My target is my grandfather's old car, Volvo 940 -90. Very bad shape, washed about 2 times a year, never detailed, and about five years ago waxed with some Turtle Wax. I live in Finland, so the conditions are rough, especially in winter.

I did only the hood. Washed and clayed with Zaino Z-7 and Zaino Claybar.

Here it is before wash.

After wash and clay. (Welcome to the Swirl-City:waxing: )

A classic half-done photo. Polished with Megs #83 with W-7006 pad.

Here is the whole hood done. Other side polished with #83/W-7006, followed by #80/W-8006, and the other side is polished with #83/W-7006, followed by Zaino ZPC/W-8006.

Well, the result:

Perfect: No

Dramatically improved: Yes

I think it turned out quite nice for a first-timer, and this was great practise-car for me. Give me some feedback. I practised only to a hood, rest of the car will come later (maybe

:)

As I posted this thread, I practised bit more today, with both rotary and random orbital, and here's a little teaser about it. I post more pictures when I finish this car.

Very good results! I don't see any rotary holograms either, so I'd say that was an excellent first time job! :)

Excellent work with the rotary for a first timer :xyxthumbs . To double confirm if there is any swirl or hologram cause by the rotary, you might want to check under direct sunlight :) .

Yes, it was getting dark when I finished, and here in Finland autumn and winter are quite dark and rainy, so the sun doesn't show very often. If there are some holograms, how can I avoid them, or should I do the last step with Random orbital?

With my limited skill with the rotary, usually there will be still be some hologram even using PO106FF with a blue polishing pad. So usually I will finish the last step with the Random Orbital to take out the hologram.

However there are still a number of fellow members here who can achieve a swirl free and hologram free finish with a rotary.

use a finishing pad and a nice polish like Menzerna PO106FF/PO85RE5 and ~1000rpm, let the polish break down. Wipe off and you have a haze free surface. Promise.

But it will take a little bit of practice. A light coloured car like the Volvo would be a piece of cake.

Keep on practice with the rotary and you will not use the random orbital for polishing, just apply wax and sealants.

Where are the burn marks???? :lol

My first time I had a real good time....LOL. Looks fantastic! Great results, especially for your first time!!! Can't wait to see your future click and brags.

Ah, I remember my first time. *thinks back to grade 9*. Cough, sorry. I mean, WOW! good job on that. I don't see any holograms, which utterly surprises me, as even I sometimes get holograms that I need to correct with the PC. afterwards. Good on ya.

I am also very excited about how little effort you can get great improvement. I think that I should practise with that Volvo a bit more, mayby full detail, before I move to my own car and other cars in our family. I have Volvo S40, which is 3 months old now, so there is few swirls, although I've tried to minimize them. Car is red btw. so I think there is enough challenge for me, and our 2 other cars are black and dark blue, so there will be even bigger challenge :chuckle:

Bro that is some awesome work!

I see no flaws at all. And that's some hard paint too!

Like others, I can't wait to see more of your work. I just got my rotary and you have inspired me to dive in.

Thank you all for giving me nice feedback! I'm so excited that I can't wait to practise a bit more. Maybe I should do full exterior detail to that Volvo this weekend as a practise :hm

Practised bit more today, this time with both rotary and random orbital. Here's a little teaser for you guys, more pictures when I finish this car (it's our third car)
