rotary arriving next week

my hitachi SP18VA is arriving next week. i ordered a 6" backplate...after reading everyone's comments here it looked like 6.5" pads is the safer way to go for starters on it. i have a bunch of flat LC 6.5" pads i've used w/ my PC but am wondering if i should buy dedicated rotary pads as well.

the LC CCS pads look good...thoughts on just sticking w/ what i have (flat LC yellow, orange, white, black) or should i get new ones?

for polish i plan on using my OP/OC/OHC mainly.

thanks-

I also have the Hitachi and absolutely love it. I should mention it's the only rotary I've owned so I can't offer comparisons to other manufacturers but that's a moot point as you already have it headed your way! My next rotary will be a Metabo though.

I initially bought dedicated pads for my new rotary but am now using some of my previous PC pads without any problems or issues. In my experience they are interchangeable. With regard to flat vs. curved or VC pad surfaces I use both and have found the flat pads to offer better coverage and working area on large, flat surfaces. I do switch to my curved pads for more concentration of both heat and product on problem areas and it works for me. I find the curved pads to be valuable for this application and in tighter spots so if you don't have any I would recommend some. Just my opinion and experience though.

I will try the LC CCS pads pretty soon but don't have any experience yet with them. Also, I love my Optimum products with the rotary!

Because of my range of pad sizes (4" spot pads to 8.5" flat pads) I have 3 different BP's for my rotary - 3.5", 5" and 6".

Good luck and let us know how you like the new machine. I like to hear your user comments once you get it. Your Acura and Honda paints will smother you with love for getting it!!!

thanks for the input!

my old accord will definitely be feeling the rotary...i also have a few friends with vehicles they will let me practice on. i barely use my PC on the TL, so no rotary for that one! :)

i'll check out the curved pads now...

Your welcome - that's what this forum is for!

It's funny. I have a neighbor who has a 99 Ford Escort he's giving to his daughter. He has a HPVC (or is it HCVP?) paint setup and in a previous life use to paint cars as a hobby. He is my local donor for trying new techniques, machines, products etc. and has said many times "I don't care if you take her down to the metal - I'm dying to repaint it". When I first got my Hitachi (received after work on a Friday) I was so excited when I got home I was dying to try it and my neighbor was sharing my exuberance. All he had to say was "Ya know, if your dying to experiment take the old "squirt" to practice on". Game on that night and I was buffing his old car until about 1 am!. I delivered it back to his driveway overnight and the next morning he and another neighbor were out staring at it. It was un freakin' beleivable and he was dissapointed, once again, that he couldn't justify repainting it! Having friends willing to donate their vehicles paint is invaluable experience.

Happy New Year and it should be with your new tool!
