Remove 3M Tape

Hi there just wondering i put some stick on chrome fake side vents held on by 3m tape about 5 months ago and would like to take them off. How would you guys recommend doing this without doing any damage thanks.
 
its a tape? like a double sided tape? emblems are generally held on by an adhesive, normally grey... normally for emblems i heat it up with a hair drier. not too much or you can damage the paint... be careful.. then i get fishingline or dental floss, and go in a sort of sawing action.. i dont really know how to describe it. like your using a cheeze slicer type thing i guess would be a good way to say it.. dont pull out away from the car, just gentley cut through the adhesive, take your time.. there will most likley be residue, so pick off whatever you can, then use something like goo gone and a microfiber and get the rest off.. have some scratch remover handy, you might put some light scratches in if this is your first time.
 
For 3M double sided tape you can heat it up moderatly with a heat gun or hair dryer and then pull it off. To get the rest of the adhesive off, you can use a prep sol or an IPA concentrate with a microfiber. Just don't rub too hard or you will damage the paint. If there is still any adhesive marks you may have to polish them out.
 
okay i took the fake side vents off my truck using a blow dryer and fishing line and goo gone automotive to remove the residue. just wondering i left a few very fine scratches from the fishing line just wondering how to remove these. They are very small and have to get up close to see but would like to get rid of them. I don't have a buffer so must be by hand. Thanks
 
if you can get a hold of some mothers scratch remover, get that, if not, grab some meguiars scratch X. . i like using foam or cotton terry applicators for using scratch removers and polishing by hand... other than the light scratches everything else came out good for you?
 
i also noticed i can see where the vent used to be will scratch x also take care of that kind of like a hologram on the paint.
 
is it something like a slightly rasied outline? can you feel it with your finger nail? if so thats just hardened adhesive, scratch x should take that off too.. btw. ive got more experience with the original scratch x than the new 2.0... every time ive debadged a car ive used the original scratch x, and they all turned out great.
 
its normal from having something protecting the paint underneath it. It can be corrected but you would most likely need a polisher. You could try scratchX by hand to see if you can blend it a bit, but this happens with any kind of sticker, decal, pinstripe, etc...
 
dheath is right. it wont hurt anything.. try the scratch remover (scratch x or mothers scratch remover) when you have time. let us know how it goes.
 
will do just wondering will a wash,clay and wax get rid of the scratches. And also the scratches are a lot worse than i thought there hard to see in cloudy weather but i was at wal-mart last night in direct sunlight and i could see the scratches from pretty far away. And if wash,clay and wax wont work when should i use scratch-x after the wash or after the clay or after the wax. I have never clayed my truck since i bought it in May 2008 and it has been seating on the lot for a few months. And i also have not waxed in about 8 months so i think its time. I'm going to use megiuars #26 Hi tech yellow wax liquid is that pretty good. I have like tons of other waxs but here good things about this. Or should i use a sealant. Thanks
 
A wash clay and wax won't do anything for scratches, unless of course the wax has filling properties. Anyways, use the scratch X after the clay bar, and if it doesn't come out then you will be destined to ordering some M105, or even a polisher and some pads to fix it up.



Wax/Sealant is really up to the look you are looking for. a good quality nuba is going to look more deep.. however from what I am told (I don't use sealants) they will look more reflective.. almost like plastic. YMMV of course.
