Please help decision making with 7424 combo and scratch removal

Hey guys,



I am going to make an order with autopia-carcare and I am aiming to remove some pretty stubborn swirl marks.



Do I buy the 7424 DAS system or the 7424 SFX system? One is 5" and one is 6" it seems?



I don't really know much about the pads that are included in the packs and if they will resolve my problem, it seems like there are a lot of steps involved!



I was thinking of getting the swirlbuster foam polishing pad and swirlbuster polish? (Unfortunately the swirlbuster foam pad isn't in stock and their contact e-mail addresses are not working?)



At the moment I have the following products:



Meguiars NXT Generation Car Wash

Mothers Clay Bar and Show Time Spray

Meguairs Scratch X

Meguairs Swirl Remover 2.0

Meguairs Medium Cut Cleaner

Meguairs NXT Generation Tech Wax



So I am going to buy one of these systems but I am having a hard time compiling a good "regime" lol.



My scratches kinda look like these (I found this pic on the forum thanks tdekany)

They are all over the trunk lid, bonnet, c pillars and the strip running to the a pillar :scared: and the color is midnight blue :scared: .



Any help is appreciated.

SFX is 6" and DAS is 7", i recomend the SFX.



You should look into better polishes. If you wanna stick with megs go for #83, #80 and #82.

Sorry about the late reply I have been away!



I purchased the following items:



Sonus Der Wunder Mitt SON-DWMITT 1 8.00

But I am not entirely happy!!



This is the process I have undertaken so far:



Wash with Meguairs NXT Car Wash using the two bucket method and Sonus Der Wundur Microfiber mitt



Chamois with Sonus drying towel (gave up on this as it was taking too long / leaving too much water behind so went back to my meguiars chamois)



Used the mothers show time spray and the mothers clay bar and clayed the entire car.



Applied Sonus SFX 1 polish with SFX 1 Pad at Speed 5 / 6 with Porter 7424



Applied Sonus SFX 2 polish with SFX 2 Pad at Speed 5 / 6 with Porter 7424



Applied Sonus SFX 3 polish with SFX 3 Pad at Speed 5 / 6 with Porter 7424



Now what I have noticed is there is a lot of white stuff / dust flying everywhere coming from the pads, is this the used product? I have been using an air compressor with a fine nozzle to spray the car off when this builds up (after I have removed the polish with sonus buffing towel), and also this air compressor seems to be effective at removing the build up on the pads! Is this safe to the paint?



The SFX 1 polish seems to be removing a lot of scratches but not all of them, I have even applied a lot of pressure and paid more attention to problem areas and some scratches are being stubborn.



The SFX 2 polish is doing an alright job at getting rid of some of the scratches



And SFX 3 I don't really know what this is doing lol, I guess it kinda makes the paint look more reflective?



So I have completed half of the car already and am nearly complete with the other half with the SFX 1 process, so tomorrow I will be completing the SFX 1 and going on with SFX 2 and SFX 3.



Has anyone got any tips on how I can remove these stubborn scratches ? I am worried that I will burn my paint ?



Maybe I should have bought some Lake Country Pads instead :(



I am not totally unhappy with my purchase as it has removed like more than %50 - %70 of scratches but the %30 left behind are still very noticeable.





Also, what would everyone say is the best polish to use to remove scratches and light swirls (there are only some light swirls left as the SFX seems to be taking care of most of them but some are a bit more stubborn and some scratches are not coming out)



This Menzerna sounds good?

I wouldn't expect to remove all the marring on your first try with a PC. No offense, but it takes some time to be able to detail like the guys do on this site, and the PC doesn't generate enough heat to do that bad of swirls very quickly. Just do one panel at a time, like the hood, and give it a good, slow buff with the sfx1 yellow pad. Inspect work, and repeat until 90& of marring is gone, then sfx2 should clean up most of the rest.

With that size pad you won't burn the paint, the PC will bog down/jiggle long before that.



A ~50-70% reduction in the marring sounds pretty good to me, you really do have to reasonable about this stuff. When spending sensible amounts of time and working (only) by PC true perfection often isn't in the cards.



Noting that I've never used that line of polishes, I'd use the most aggressive until the scratches/etc. are OK and replaced by hazing/micromarring, *then* and only then would I switch to the medium (let alone the fine) polish.



If you've truly run up against the limits of your system, the next step is to get a small backing plate and some 4" pads. Yeah, that *will* make that much of a difference. I'd probably try that before switching to a different brand of polish unless you have some kind of strong dislike for what you're currently using.
 
If that doesn't work, you may need to step up to something like Menzerna PG, or hi temp EC. But those are some pretty strong products, so be careful.
 
I just started using my PC and have basically the same set up as you. I have the klasse AIO instead of the SFX 3 though. It have had really impressive results on my daughter's "practice" truck. I think you may be using too much speed with the PC. The white stuff is your dried polish. I wash my SFX pads under the tap with lukewarm water and wring them to dry. They come pretty clean. You can brush a lot of the polish off the pad with a brush, but I don't have one.

I really like my ultimate drying towel. I don't think I'll ever use a chamois again. I take the nozzle off the hose and make a sheet of water on the vehicle (vs spraying) it really helps the water sheet off, then just dry it with the towel.

I realized that I was using too much speed andtrying to "rush" the job. After I slowed down the PC and was more methodical in the area I was working the results were a lot better. I also started pushing down on the PC instead of just letting it glide around. Not too much pressure though...you'll have to practice to see what works best for you.

Okay well I am nearly finished, I have been taking a lot more time with it now and am seeing some great results! You should see my C pillar and boot photos, the scratches were insane! And yeah I think most of them have come out so hopefully before the sun goes down today I will grab some shots and post them up!



Thanks for the info rjirvine, yeah I was thinking I was using too much speed but the car was really in horrible shape, scratches and swirls absolutely everywhere all over the car, it looked ridiculous in the direct sunlight lol.



Yeah maybe those drying towels work better if you sheet the water, I just expected them to be a lot better than the chamois.

drmz- Glad to hear it's going better. As you're learning, you don't have to worry *too* much about being too aggressive with the PC.
