PC 7424 pad questions and sizes?

I will be getting a PC 7424, but I wanted to get the pads as well. Nothing like having a PC looking at you with no pads to work with... :hairpull:

I am so very confused by the pad sizes. The PC says it is 6" but why would you want a 6.5" or larger pad then?

I have searched, everyone discusses what they order but I can't seem to find why or how the whole pad usage applies.

Also, with regard to the backing plate, what is that for?

I am looking at LC, Meguiars and Edge pads. I am looking at this backing: Flexible Backing Plates for DA Polishers ON SALE!

Are all pads velcro on?

What a noob :doh

I can recommend Meguiars PC Pads, the 6.5" Pads are suitable for PC, i use with a 5.5" Backing Plate :2thumbs:

if you don't have any pads or backing plate

I would look into the edge system

the pads are double sided & use a threaded adapter

in place of the backing plate

you can also use them on the 9227 you will just need a different adapter

I am liking the edge system, it looks great to me.

I am just confused about the backin plates. If the PC is a 6" and the Makita is a 7", how can I use the same pads? Wouldn't the disc on teh Makita be too large for the foam pad?

Also, a 6.5" or larger pad on a 6" PC, wouldn't that be too big of a pad for the size of the backing plate?

I guess I am just confused about functionality. I don't really know how to search the forum for that either, and I must have read 25+ pages looking for pad information. :hairpull

6.5" is just right for a 6" backing plate. The backing plate is only there to hold the pad; you don't need support all the way to the edge of the pad. You wouldn't want the backing plate all the way to the edge of the pad anyway, because you would risk damaging the paint if the edge of the backing plate touched it. On concave surfaces, you want the edge of the pad to flex a little.

Great, thanks. That's what I was looking for.

Would you guys recommend different pads for a PC than you would the rotary?

Any 'significant' differences in the Meguiars vs. Edge vs. Lake Country pads? Those seem to be the most frequently talked about on here...

I'd suggest Edge or LC due to variety of pads. The Megs pads have a history of the velcro coming off. The are great pads for rotary work tho.

It appears Edge has a few lines of pads to purchase...

Which ones and where have you guys purchased them?

I can't seem to find the 'classic foam' ones anywhere...

If you can find one locally, I would buy the PC by itself and then get the pads and backing plate separately. It seems to be a little cheaper that way. I was able to get the PC from lowes, 6 pads from Meguaires, a backing plate and 3 different products for about $150.
