New Toy, suggestions please !!

So, i rear ended a truck with my sentra and made it look like this

then came the question of what to buy next, since the parents were not using the sentra as thought. Next idea was a truck but there are some limitations, and mainly cost.

some suv's are not to mmmy liking after workng at a used dealer in service.

Then, what's a truck and suv at the same time ?? i refered to my jeep service days,

so i started a hunt for a wrangler.

my question is for those of you who have detailed wranglers,

give me some tips / tricks to working on their odd shaped body panels,



i have read that the "back to black" product from poor boys is really good,

should i invest in it, or some other brand product ?? those fender flares bother me being faded :scared:



any other suggestions ???

i know about a 2-4in lift and 35in tires,

that may happen but i would like to throw a cam and trimmings on the camaro :cool:

it is an aftermarket gauge overlay,

the whole backing of the cluster lights up indigo blue, and the #s and needles are black and white respectively
 
Don't even bother messing with those fenders and dressing or back to black. You need to take them off and paint them properly. My dad has the same problem and there is nothing short of repainting that will help.



As for the odd body panels and what not, I'm not sure whether you're working by PC or Cyclo but good luck. With both machines it was a test of my patience. In general Wranglers take a long time to detail because there is just so much to cover...good luck, hope you enjoy the new car.
 
I used to have a '97 TJ and the fenders will always go gray. I went through multiple bottles of Back-to-Black, and it works, but only temporarily. I always wanted to paint them, but it's a Jeep, it's supposed to get dirty.
 
I find the PC easier to use on a Wrangler than the Cyclo, especially around the back end. Tape off the fenders and top when polishing the painted area between them or use a 4" pad, there isn't much room and a full sized pad will leave polish on both the top and the fender. Be prepared to remove the spare tire every single time you wash your Jeep. You just can't reach all the back door if you leave it on. Buy shares in Armor All, you will be using a lot to keep the tires, fenderwells, etc looking good, might as well profit from it!



I agree with the others, paint the fenders.
 
my bro in law wants to paint the fenders, so i guess i'll let him,

i'm asuming flat black, gloss would look funny since the finish is kind of coarse :(
 
how do you use menzerna by hand ??



what are the motions ??



i would like to polish with IP and seal with cmw



what about cmw over ocw ??
 
What kind of paint did you use to paint the fenders. Oddly enough someone I work with asked me to detail his Wrangler and asked if I knew how to "fix" the fenders. I told him repaint them and he asked if I did that and how much!!

Krylon Fusion. i used gloss black (that's all the parts store had ) but other guys on jeep forums use the satin black. the flares are kind of a pain to remove. they have 8-10 bolts inside the fender flare and they have plastic retainer clips. these clip tend to turn with the bolt once the bolts are loosened. rear fenders are worse than the front. the smaller trim at the bottom of the front fenders come out ok. about 5 bucks per can i think.



you can tape off the fenders and paint them on the jeep, just make sure you take your time to mask off everything. my bro in law and i removed them but it took a while.



make sure you use a good degreasing or ammonia based cleaner to clean and prep the flares,

make sure they are super dry !!



paint dries in about 15 mins.
 
Would something like a plastic dye work out well for the fenders? I would think that since the Jeep is more of a utility vehicle, the paint would take a beating pretty quick (as opposed to a dye that actually seeps into the plastic). It's just a thought...I'm thinking of doing this to my sister's Jeep as I'm tired of using the back to black on it :) Maybe it wouldn't even work?
 
How about a Rhino Liner on the flares...keeping the texture and if you actually off-road in it nothing will ever happen to them.
 
i wouldn't try the rhino lining, just doesnt make sense,

plus i wouldn't think it would adhere to plastic that well.



dye - i painted my fenders like 2 months ago and they have seen rain,mud and salt / snow and when i wash it, it still looks just fine/



how will it look in a year, who knows but i would think the paint should last,

they show a children's play house on the can, something that would stay outside all year round, so it should be pretty durable
