Keeping Busy

This is my first year in business and I was expecting things to slow down this time of year but the phone has been ringing off the hook lately and I'm booked up straight through to next weekend.

I am booked through next Friday solid but the expected rain is going to really put me behind.

Good to hear you are staying busy, this is usually a very good time of year for details because summer travel season is over, cars are dirty and the holidays are coming up. The 4th quarter of the year is often my best unless the weather is really bad.

Don't be surprised to find that you are busy right into mid-December, especially if the weather stays mild. That's usually the time when I finally get a breather from pre-winter details.

I can't get a phone call to save my life. I havent detailed anything since septemer. What kind of advertising are you doing

Primarily we are using flyers, by the thousands. We are still getting calls from flyers that we passed out months ago.

We are working full time and usually do two cars a day. We have a buy one get one 50% off coupon and we have people go out of their way to get two cars home on the same day.

Be careful. Being in business is not just about keeping busy.

For example, if all of your jobs were coming from your 50% off coupons, that would be like you cutting your overall income by 25%. Sure you are bringing in more business, but at what price? Are you sure that you can still make the hourly rate you need to make by cutting your income by 25%?

It is much more important to attract good customers who are focused on the quality of your work and willing to pay a fair price. They are the customers who will allow you to cover your expences, make a reasonable profit and stay in business.

Remember, good detailing customers are usually not very price sensitive. Most are more concerned with getting a high quality job, rather than just a low price.
