How long does it take for you to clay?

Read an article today where they interviewed Barry Meguiar about proper car care, he said claying is essential and is quick. He said it can be done in 20 minutes. I am doing something wront cause it takes me over an hour to clay my car. I do small areas like 12x12, etc.
 
Obviously it depends on the size of the car, and it also depends how "dirty" the car is. If there is a lot of contamination, the actual claying will be slightly slower, and you will have to stop to knead the clay more often. Also, as with anything, the more times you do something, usually the more efficient you become.
 
Don't get obsessed about claying every square inch.



Focus most on flat surfaces (the areas that have the most fallout/contaminants) and upper surfaces that are most visible to you.



And try claying while washing your car. Wash your car first, then wash it again, using soapy water as your lubricant.



If it takes you an hour to clay your car, you're likely to get burned out and give up on the process.

I used to fully dry and then clay panel by panel. Now I wash fully, rinse the car of all soap and while its still wet begin my claying using a slick lube (im usuing less lube now as the car is still wet when claying) I never liked claying with shampoo on the car. After, i give the car a quick once over with the remaining wash solution and mitt and then rinse it all off.
 
For "Common" level of claying on normal conditions it's about a 20 minute job tops. Obviously the more contaminated the vehicle the longer it's going to take.
 
Yeah I normally work with cars that need a clay really bad so it takes me longer. Once the car is done once, usally can get away with spot claying. I admit I obsess a little and have to hit every square inch of the car. One think that may be slowing me down is I cut the clay bar in half. My fingers get pretty tired from moving the clay back and forth.
