Helpful suggestion to improve responses in this forum

Please do not refer to pads by color type. Not all manufacturers use the same colors for the same level of aggressiveness. Asking if the yellow pad by so and so is the right pad to use is going to get you a ??? from those who don't use those pads. Forget the color, that is just to look pretty. If you ask if the polishing pad by so and so is the correct pad for your situation is going to allow more people to answer your question more quickly.

:)

I agree. Not to sound mean or anything, but I usually ignore posts that ask for advice on "blue pads" because I don't want to deal with a back-and-forth converstation within the thread. Isn't there a chart someone made that explains which colors different companies use to code for aggressiveness? It should really be a sticky.

Manufacturers should standardize on the colours.

Not going to happen, they aren't going to cooperate on that level.

As long as everyone refers to the pad's rating instead of color, they can get their questions answered more quickly.

I can't take credit for this. Its from an old post that another forum member took the time to put togehter. I cut and pasted it and then saved for future reference. I wonder if it wouldn't hurt to sticky it or keep it somewhere on the forum for quick reference.

MANUFACTURER MED CUT LIGHT CUT POLISH LIGHT Finish

Propel Yellow Orange Green Blue Grey

LC Classic Yellow Orange White - Black

LC Hi-Gloss Yellow Orange White - Black/Red

Sonus DAS Orange Green Blue -

Sonus SFX Yellow White Blue -

Meguiars Burgandy Yellow - Tan

Edge 2000 Yellow Green Blue White

To figure out what products to use with what pads, find the polish abrasiveness from this thread.

Then check below to see what type of pad to use for that grade.

Finally look at the above table to see what make and colour of pad you need -

MED CUT - grade 5,6,7

LIGHT CUT - 4,5,6

POLISH - 2,3,4

LIGHT POLISH - 1,2

FINISH - Waxes or Sealants

I have deliberately missed out heavy cut pads and polishes from 8-10 because I think they are for Rotary or wool pads only.

Here are some places I found that sell the above pads.

Propel - www.exceldetail.com

LC Classic - www.autogeek.net/vcpad.html

LC Hi-Gloss (Constant Pressure) - www.properautocare.com/hi612infopaa.html

Sonus DAS - http://autopia-carcare.com/sondas.html

Sonus SFX - http://autopia-carcare.com/sondas.html

Meguiars - www.autogeek.net/mg64.html

Edge 2000 - www.autogeek.net/edge20006.html

I think we have pads by probably 7 manufacturers. So I have a habit of picking up a pad and pulling my thumb across it. Till you get to the extremely fine ones its a fairly good indicator.

Also, with what we have, orange seems to be standard.

If they state the manufacturer, then specifying the pad color is fine.

Not if you aren't familiar with that manufacturer's pads. I have no idea what the colors are for Sonus pads for example and when I am surfing 2-3 forums at a time, I'd prefer not to have to look up a chart to see what someone is talking about. Like porkandbeans, I don't even respond to questions if the pad color only is mentioned.

I agree. The person asking the question is going to benefit from the response. The person asking the question should put the effort into ID'ing the pad correctly.

In an effort to save "whatever", this forum is probably the worst I read for acronyms and double meaning (such as "I have an orange pad"). The "Secret Decoder Ring" is fine, but its not up to date and the link to it is on the home page. It would be nice if that type of reference material was on every page in the upper right by the links and search functions. I think there would be better response and less people asking redundant questions if we could reduce acronyms and add some resources in the forums pages.

FWIW-IMHO :tribe:

Exactly. The more information contained in the question, the higher the likelyhood of an accurate answer.

That is true as well, but not everybody knows what IP, or QEW is so it leads to the question should we stop using abbreviations too? Just being argumentive here. :dance
