Grit Guards

I bought the buckets from lowes too! So I just trimmed the outside of the grit guards to fit.... now they work perfect!

I was on the US Plastics site. Do you have a link or direction to the ship free coupon??

Also, since I have the Lowes buckets too (unfortunate that they aren't a little wider at the bottom) do any of the US Plastics buckets work? I'll check the measurements, but thought someone already had a model number figured out.

Thanks.

See ya. :wavey:

Use code 57590 when you check out, it is only for UPS ground, but still save ya some money.

I have a gray bucket from HD or Lowes that was too small that i use as my rinse bucket and I just took the very outer ring of the GG off, and it fit.

Cut off the red ring, but let the little tabs that hold the rings together, blue arrow. I hope you get what I am trying to say, ha..

Hey, thanks a lot. Appreciate the info.

I was on the site.......does that coupon still work?? I'm not sure. ? And, the shipping to here in Rochester, was like $9 for a couple of buckets & a couple of Gamma seals. A little much for regular buckets, so I hope the coupon flies.

Tthx.

The translucent buckets from Lowe's are nice because they also have measuring lines on the outside.

Ah yes, translucent was the word I was searching for and could not come up with. I definitely like the buckets a lot though! They have been very durable and the measuring lines are a nice plus as well!

Were those the 3.5 gal. or 5 gal. translucent versions?

I bought the Lowes white/5 gal. buckets (because I hate the HD "orange") but, alas, too narrow at the bottom. Who would have guessed.............

Thx.

the best thing to do is bring the GG with you and see if it will fit inside the bucket. not all buckets are created equal...

i would like to let everyone know, i got 2- 5 gallon buckets from tractor supply that work perfectly and they were only $2.99

I have the same problem - my GG's won't fit my Lowes 5 gal buckets. I think I'll just cut the outer ring off rather than buy more buckets. It doesn't cost me anything to cut the ring off and the Lowes buckets are nice.

FWIW, the cheapest buckets I've found can be had at Firehouse Subs. Their old pickle buckets can be had for a $2 donation. They're the same dimensions as the Lowes buckets. It does take a little while for the dill smell to go away but it doesn't seem to transfer to the car.

I bought the lowes bucket awhile ago only to find out what everyone has said so far - too narrow. I debated on cutting the grit guard, but then I figured... should I attempt to cut a 10 dollar GG or just save 3 bucks by returning the 6 dollar bucket and getting a 3 dollar orange bucket from home depot.

No brainer...

Don't get fooled by the filling effect of pickle juice. Be sure to do an IPA wipedown afterwards.

I also have the 5 gallon translucent bucket with the padded handle and marks on the sides from lowes. My GG fits nice and snug right in the bottom with no trimming. Definitely the only bucket Ill ever use. :xyxthumbs

I have the 3.5 gallon buckets personally.

Hi Guys,

Just have to jump in too :) ......................have looked into the dimensions of all the buckets I can find to ensure they will fit the Grit Guard "correctly". I need a few myself!

Ugh...........amazing! Buckets..................... but, who knew?? :think2

Based on what I've found, just go to US Plastics and buy a "premium" (~$5+) or "standard" quality (~$3+) bucket. (FYI - the 5 gal. premium bucket comes in a variety of different colors for you fashionistas! My fav. would be "yellow" if the Grit Guards I have weren't red!! :cooleek:) Also, as in the thread, they have 3.5gal units that actually have a slightly larger bottom diameter - will easily fit the Grit Guard.

The Rest

The bottom diameter of a bucket that correctly fits the Grit Guard is ~10.33" (+/- 10 3/8"). The Grit Guard will settle nicely to the bottom of buckets with that diameter w/a touch of clearance.

For colors, I prefer white and a non-black Grit Guard so I can easily see sediment at the bottom of the bucket................but, we all have our aesthetic idiosyncrasies!!

* The Lowes buckets are indeed too narrow, as the post says (unfortunate, at a mere $2.78ea.) About 9.75" bottom diameter.

* Home Depot seems to fit (bigger bottom diameter). Just $2.50+/-, but, it's Pumpkin Orange!

* Walmart has white 5 gal. buckets, again, the same small 9.75" bottom diameter. Buckets were ~ $4.95ea.

* A check of the local Sears & KMart paint sections yielded no buckets at all.

* The local Harbor Freight retail location has a white 5 gal. bucket...........bottom diameter of ~12". Actually, a little large, surprisingly. Buckets are ~$4.95ea.

* As a poster suggested, Tractor Freight has buckets that will fit. On-line, they also have a plain HD bucket with the preferred diameters (like US Plastics).

* Sherwin Williams Paint stores have a "Blue SW" bucket with a bottom diameter close to optimum. A 1/16' to an 1/8" too narrow at the bottom..........close, but no cigar.

So, there you have it..........................I'm sure "THE Bucket" is out there locally, but, my index finger is tired of dialing and gas is too expensive! I'm placing an on-line order. BTW, US also has matching seals, Gamma seals, the GG's and a good assortment of spray bottles.

Thx.

See ya. :wavey:

I ran into that problem too. All five gallon buckets are not created equal.

You and your ggs will have to take a road trip or two to your local hardware store(s) until you find the right size.

I just had this happen too. Lowes buckets too small. So I had some old 5 gallon dill pickle buckets that my mom got from her work at Burger King. They're a few years old so the dill smell is pretty much non existent. Worked great.

I rechecked my dill pickle buckets from Firehouse Subs. It turns out the GG's just barely fit, with some pushing, all the way to the bottom. They don't fit the Lowe's buckets.

I think I'm going to start saving the left over liquid in the bottom of my pickle jars and resell it as dill wet glaze. The REAL DWG. :woohoo:
