Duragloss #253 discontinued? Carquest thinks so.

Dan, I tend to stop using tire dressing once the snow starts falling. I find that the residual salt (dust) on dry pavement tends to stick in a bad way to the tire gloss leaving tires with a whitish appearance.

It sounds like the #253 is a "drier" product and tends to last longer. Do you think it would be a good choice for the winter months or have you found something better?

Thx.

I don't think its any better than Mother's FX in that regard. Like I mentioned, FX washes away clean and there is no residual crap on the tire to trap dirt like there is with other "durable" OTC products.

Is this the one that was separated at birth from Z16?

If so, I'm using up my old Z16, will try PERL exclusively for a while, but if I prefer Z16, I'll go with this one, 253.

Dan, thanks again. I appreciate your comments.

I might keep the bottle of spray Endurance. It claims to be long-lasting...maybe it will be the right solution for winter tires.

I got a couple bottles of FX tire stuff plus FX spray wax plus a couple of fresh E1 tire swipes at lunch. All for around $21 :)

This Summer I tried out two new tire dressings against my favorite, Stoners More Shine for tires.

I tried out Duragloss 253 and from my Amazon sampler kit, Optimum tire shine.

I did all 3 of my vehicles at the same time and separated each tire into three different sections noting what was on each to get a fair analysis of each.

One of the cars, my winter beater got no washings what-so-ever for 3 weeks.

The other two got washed once a week as usual.

What did I find?

That each had a signature look of their own right after application but after a few days it was hard to tell each one apart.

After a couple rainstorms there really was noting left of any of them.

What I did notice was that Duragloss 253 attracted more dirt/dust that either Optimum or Stoners. This was not just on one but all three cars.

Final verdict...

I will stick with Stoner MSLT for tires.Easy application, last as long (if not longer) than DG & Optimum, and available everywhere.

I'm just a fan of water based dressings like 303, Z16, even AA,etc . I haven't used the solvent based ones in years.

I like Stoners too, but I always end up using 3-4 times more product with it than the FX. Lookswise, its slightly different, perhaps a bit less shine and a bit more black than FX, but good stuff too. No mess after it washes away either.

You have to watch Carquest products. I've seen some products at my local carquest that likely haven't been seen elsewhere in over a decade. Like an old bottle of Meguiars Medallion. They also have really old DG products and Zymol cleaner wax as well. Zymol's supposed to be blue, but a couple of bottles are turning white. LMAO.

Stuff is so old the labels are discolored and rotting off. No joke.. I called Jerry at DG a while back and asked him about some of this stuff, and if it was ok to buy. Carquest did pull some of the older DG products off the shelf by the next time I went in.

I noticed the same thing at CQ and similar smaller stores years ago. They must assume some consumers won't notice. It's not good to hear it still goes on today :nervous:
