Do you detiail for $ or for pleasure

Just a weekend hobby! I’d rather do what I not so love with a regular paycheck than do what I love and starve.:nixweiss

After you do 300+ cars a year it become work and it not very fun anymore. If I did not get pay for it I would not be detailing.

I respectfully disagree. I detail more vehicles than that in a year and STILL love it. Granted...one does get sick of seeing the nasty child playpen Suburban's but when you get your hands on a nice Vette or a BMW it kinda makes up for it. :xyxthumbs

Pleasure! This is a hobby for me, and I mostly do my own cars. My day job is veterinary medicine, and while I find it challenging and rewarding, it is work for me. I detail to relax and get my mind off of work. If I was getting paid, and had to interract with clients, etc. I do not know how enjoyable it would be for me.

I do it for both. I've been known to do it for free if I can't make the sale. I try to get money for it first, but if they just don't have the money and I really want to try some stuff on their car, then I just do it for free. I'm a bit of a product whore and I need test cars to try stuff out on. I don't mind doing it for free if I'm testing products. Detailing isn't fun enough that I would do it all day long for free... the money is a motivator. How else am I going to keep myself supplied with all these products if I can't make them work for me and earn their keep? ;)

what he said...:xyxthumbs

After more than 10 years detailing full time, I still sometimes can't believe people pay me to do something I love doing!

Only detail my own car, and purely for pleasure and relaxation. I find it both meditative and gratifying, with the look and feel of polished paint being the final reward.

When I stop and think about the fact that I have been operating my own detailing business for more than 18 years, there have actually been many situations when I have told my customers that I should be paying them. This is especially true when I detail either a classic car or an exotic sports car like the new 645 BMW and when I'm just doing a dock-side boat detailing on a sunny summers day at the Jersey Shore.

I've seen your work Scottwax and I'd pay you to do my vehicle and trust me......NO ONE TOUCHES MY VEHICLE!!!:)

i do it because i love it... i always tell customers that i do it because i love detailing, and seeing a car lookin better than new, unlike the dealerships, who try to do it in the least possible time, while making money... i could spend 12 hours on one car and not care at all...i want it looking its very best... i do detailing beacuse its fun, and relazing... money is just a bonus, as others said

If I really didn't like detailing, I would do something else. :nixweiss

Are you just getting burned out by a heavy workload?

I started detailing my car obsessivley because it was new...it has evolved into stress relief and is cheaper than therapy. While not as effective as walking or lifting weights, you do get some exercise too. As a project manager, I sit on my butt and go to meetings, meetings and more meetings. Detailing my car has been fun and provided a healthy outlet for work related frustration.

After seeing the results I've had with my car, a lot of my friends and coworkers have asked me how much I'd charge to do their car. Tomorrow I'm helping a friend with his car and if I have two paying customers lined up for next weekend...if I can make enough to pay for my rather expensive hobby, I'll be happy. That's all I really want to do for now.

Pleasure, though I would not mind doing a few cars once in a while for pay. My neighbor just bought his wife a leftover 2003 Mercedes-Benz CLK-430 convertible, a lady down the street has a new Corvette, and another neighbor has a Viper. The street also has several RX 300s, an Infiniti M45, several Volvos, etc. Would love to detail those cars but I am going to fully detail our cars (parents' two cars and my car) first in hopes of them seeing me detail, LOL.

Mainly for the hobby, recreational exercise and personal satisfaction. I really hate gyms and jogging.

Just turned semi-pro this summer. Did some friends cars for free, they showed these to people they know and now I detail and maintain five cars for three single female college professors. I must admit I couldn't believe they said OK to the price and appreciate what I do. I can understand why some people do this full time.
