Clay bar not working!

I just got some clay from Griot's Garage and tested it out tonight. I first washed the car with ONR and then after drying proceeded to attempt to clay the car. I cut off a piece of clay, folded it into a paddy and worked it back and forth using ONR (2 ounces to 1 gallon) as the lube.

The paint had absolutely no change in feel or look after claying and the clay had no containments on it. What am I doing wrong. The temp in the garage was probably a few degrees above freezing. Would the cold make the clay totally ineffective?

Any ideas? I was hoping to make my paint super smooth.

Thanks, Josh

There is no difference at all in the way it feels. Even if it wasn't aggressive enough shouldn't it make it somewhat smoother? I am going to try again by warming the clay in hot water and pouring hot water on the car to warm it up.

yeah, typically you would feel a "gritty" feel when passing your hand over the paint... as in you can feel that there are some contaminants on the paint... then after you clay, 1) you should see said contaminants on the clay bar (usually darker/dirty streaks or molecule size bits on the clay) & b) the paint should feel less gritty and more like butter smooth (of course depending on how dirty etc the car was initially)...

at leas, that is in my experience with my car! :)

So I tried it again after warming the clay in hot water and also pouring hot water over the paint. The surface definitely feels smoother now. And yes I am feeling it with my bare hands.

I guess I will have to wait for some warmer weather to clay the whole car. Wasn't aware the cold would affect it that much.
