Clay bar + fading/oversprayed/waxed trim questions.

Hi there,

I bought the quick clay detailing system, but I was unsure about a few things...

Should I spray a LOT of quick detailer on the paint surface as a lubricant so that the bar slides over? The reason I ask is because I used quite a lot of the quick detailer spray, and it didnt feel like the bar was picking anything up (I have never clay barred the car before). Also, when I was finished, there was hardly any surface dirt/bits on the claybar... should I be using less lubricant so that the claybar drags a bit more? or was I doing it correctly (i.e. it is supposed to glide over extremely smoothly). Also, how hard should I be pressing down on the surface with the clay?

My other question is about exterior rubber seals (around the windows mainly). They seem to have a bit of buildup of either paint overspray or wax overspray from quite a few years ago, and so they don't look nice and black (the black seems to have either faded slightly, or is obscured by the paint/wax). Are there any products that you recommend that might help this?

Thank you for your help!

You need lots of lubrication. The clay should not grab the paint surface; it should glide smoothly.

Look into Einzett Gummipflege for weatherstripping seals. I have a ton of detailing stuff, but Gummipflege is one of the candidates for my all-time favorite product.

try applying some poorboy's trim restorer via a terry pad. wait a bit, and then buff off the excess with a MF. your trim should look great again.

if you wanna to find out if your claybar is doing anything you should feel the surface of the paint before claying... you should feel some roughness here and there. apply the quick detail and clay the area, after wiping dry feel the surface again and it should be smooth.

you can also use soapy water as a substitute for qd
