Can you use the PC7424 as a sander?

I'm going to try to sell my wife on letting me get a sander to do a fairly large paint job that I've got. This is probably my only shot at getting one for a long time. Can the PC7424 be used as a sander too, or is there another brand that I should be looking at? Please keep in mind this also will be my first time machine polishing a car.



What do you guys recommend?

If you go for the PC7336, that's actually marketed as a sander, so your 'owner' won't suspect a thing! LOL



You'll just need to get a decent hook & loop backing plate so you can use sponge polishing pads.
 
When I first looked at buying one several years ago I always thought of it as a sander. I never knew untill I found this place of its alternative lifestyle.
 
Wow, ok, it looks like I can go with the 7336, its a variable speed and looks like the same speed range as the 7424, it's random orbit, so what's the difference? Also isn't 2500 rpm a little fast. I saw some threads that were suggesting speeds of 1500. Is the only difference between the 7336 and the 7336SP that one comes with a polishing disc?

I have both models of PC, the only difference is the size of the backing plate and the matching counterweight. That's the *ONLY* difference, period. They're both *really* sanders, it was only fairly recently (relatively speaking) that people started using them with foam pads to polish cars and they started describing the one as a "sander/polisher".



Just be careful that you don't let a piece of abrasive from the sandpaper cause problems when you go back to polishing cars!

That's rpm for a rotary, not opm for an orbital. 2500 opm is actually too slow for most anything so you generally run the PC higher up the dial.

The PC can be used as a sander. If you want an excuse to get a sander/polisher, check out the Cyclo. It can also double as a darn good sander.
 
I just bought the 7336SP last night at Lowe's. Thanks guys for your help and advice. Now I have to read the rest of the forum so I can figure out how to use this thing the right way.

When you sand with it take Accumulator's advice, be very careful to clean any sanding debris off the PC before using to polish paint again.
