That sucks. I did that once at an apartment that I lived at. I went upstairs litterally for just long enough to change my shirt, and when I came down someone had stolen my backpack out of the car. It wasn't really a huge loss, but my planner was in it and I had to try and remember all the stuff that I needed to cancel. Now I keep a seperate sheet of paper with all my account numbers and 800 numbers to cancel them in case my wallet ever gets stolen.
Look at it this way.... At least you don't have to worry about identity theft with this one. (I know it sucks, but I'm just trying to be positive)
