it was going to be a really nice day, so i started to work on my jetta around 10am or so, it wasnt going too bad - things started looking really good after literally just a few minutes. i just did the golf/jetta front end swap a few weeks ago with a guy i met on a local board - and his paint was not nearly in as good of shape as mine unfortunately - but i am still very happy with the swap we did.
what i started with - just a fewwwww swirls in the hood
a couple good side scratches from an overly helpful parent after a snowstorm (p.o. of the hood's mom)
bye bye swirls =)

yea... now for the fun stuff. little did i know that the clear on the hood was total crap
yea... that's where the painters tape was for all of 15 minutes.... right up the center of the freaking hood
it's about 1-1/2" wide by a foot or so long. clearcoat just peeled right up with the tape. i absoutely have never had that happen before. i guess i'll need to get a quicky spray on the hood now to take care of it. i had wanted to do something - there are 2 dime size chips that i wanted to take care of... just down the road.
good thing i guess, is that i can deal with the color being off slightly, as it won't be super noticible being that it only contacts the tops of the fenders - not like i would be painting a side panel and trying to match it up
oh well... i grabbed a beer and called it a day after that. packed up all my supplies and quit. what is it with the clearcoat failures i've been reading about as of late?
what the car looks like with the front end swap - no real good (clean) pics of the car after the swap, but here is a semi dirty one
and prior to doing it (last fall when i bought it)
so i assume i am pretty screwed on the hood... wetsanding the clear off really won't do much i assume (if it's even possible to do it and not make matters worse) i've just come to grips that i'll end up most likely just getting the hood resprayed at one point - maybe this summer sometime.
oh yea - the process
meg's gold class wash
meg's 83 on yellow cutting pads via cyclo buffer x2
meg's 80 on orange cutting/polishing padsvia cyclo buffer x2
meg's 16 by hand x1
i'm about 1/2 way thru my meguiars 80/83 and will be trying some other stuff as i get closer to finishing these product off. i know there are some that dont work well with the cyclo - so i'll see which way i end up going this summer then.
