You know what is really sad about the images of looters?

Bad enough there are thugs and punks stealing from fellow victims of Katrina but what is at least equally as bad, if not worse, is that some people are using those pictures and videos of looters as justification for their racist attitudes. I am just stunned at what I have seen on another message board; and apparently, so is the administrator who has banned literally hundreds of members for racism.

It's just unreal that people can view the actions of a few and project them onto an entire race.

That would be the same as having a bad experience with one detailer and knocking them all!:) You're a good man Scott!

As I stated in another thread, the whole "looter" issue is extremely upsetting, for a couple of reasons. The fact that folks are stealing from one another is one thing. But to make the decision to focus on "security" and looting over rescuing is another issue. If people need to break into a store to simply find shoes and socks or any left over food, whatever they can, even if it's useless to them (think televisions), just let them. It's not like the store owner is going to be going back there any time soon and resell the stuff! Finally, because of this type of looting they send in military and police holding guns in large tactile vehicles...what kind of message is that supposed to send those sitting on the side of the road waiting for help?

I heard about a group of 50-100 firefighters being literally held up in a building surrounded by a gang...the gang was supposedly going to loot stores and such. Where was the military in this situation? I'm just really upset at some of the things I see and hear on the television screen....

IN MY OPINION:I think the NAACP is really fueling the fire. I dont think race would be near as much of an issue if the NAACP wasnt pointing fingers. On CNN today I saw the head of the NAACP say that "white people are being rescued while african american people are left behind." I'm not there, so that may be the case, but I find that hard to believe. I'm not going to say that there is no racism there, but just like the gas scare from this week here in Atlanta.... people believe what the media tells them. I fear that the NAACP has had a hand now in creating an avalanche with a snowball. I REALLY hope I am wrong though. I really hope that everyone makes it out of there OK. May those who have lost their lives rest in peace.

I really feel sorry for the good people that are seemingly trapped there. They aren't the ones that are shooting at the people who are doing all they can to help. All who have volunteered to help get 110% of my respect. I also hope that each and every rescue worker involved is successful in saving as many people as possible and remain safe themselves. The whole process would be sped up if PEOPLE WOULD STOP SHOOTING AT THEM!

I know a few people who have been activated as part of the Massachusetts DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Teams) and the USAR ( Urban Serach and Rescue) team (MA TF-1)

The DMAT team had to be removed under armed guard for their safety because they were being attacked for the medications that they carry. The nutcases are taking pot shots at the very people trying to save their sorry asses.

Jesus Christ we should have saw this coming  The white people are the minority now. Do you ever see a "white holiday"? It's racist but there's plenty of other race holidays.

My mother who has been around for a LONG time bets there will be a civil war....

What are you, a pinhead? The last United States census taken shows that whites make up 75.1% of the population - meaning 3 out of every 4 people in this country are white.

What's a "white" holiday? There is Columbus Day and Washington's Birthday which are both federal holidays - they're white! But we don't honor them because they are white just like we don't honor Martin Luther King because he is black. Rather he is honored for his accomplishments which include bringing about federal legislation by non violent means to enable an entire race of Americans the right to vote and provide the same civil rights that the rest of the country enjoys. Imagine being an American and not having the right to vote until the 1960's yet you fought with distinction and honor in WWI, WW2 and Korea?

You (and your mother's) simplistic lack of intellect is laughable. You sound like the butt of a Jeff Foxworthy "You might be a redneck if" joke.

Don't judge an entire group of people because of the actions of a handful of criminals.

While you're at it, enlighten us with your ivy league wisdom, and name some "plenty of other race holidays" that you speak of.

this is off topic, but there have also been many reports of rapes. Men just dragging women off the street into random houses...

I think the real basis of the problem in this regard is one of socio-economic class. Those still stuck there in New Orleans that had financial resources and places to actually go to have been finally finding ways to charter private means of transport and get out.....and this took several days of absolute hell to accomplish as it was. The majority of middle class (somewhere areound 80%) in this country are white and upwards of 90% of the poor are of minority groups of color. Racism in this country does not have to direct animus, bias or hatred to exist. Racism in this country is an institutionalized problem based on low socio-economic class. It's being poor that get you disenfranchised and marginalized and left behind regardless of skin color. But the hard fact is is that it is people of color who make of a majority of this country's poor and underserved. Our economy is not infinately elastic to support eradication of this socio-economic disadvantage and who amongs is the middle class will give up their spot? Who among us does not work their tail off to acheive what they have thus far? There are no simple answers or quick fixes here but that doesn't excuse us as a country from trying, trying and trying again to do better and improve. We are a democracy but also a capitalist society ( and lets face it, most, if not all of the governments in the world that denounce capitalism for its socio-economic disparities have only acheived minimizing the standard of living for even larger groups of their people while enhancing their own...ie China, North Korea and the former USSR) and money speaks with the loudest voice in most cases. Perhaps this apocolyptic disaster will improve our hearing more as a country and maybe restructure some of our priorities.

Considering 67%+ of the population of New Orleans is black of course most of the pics the media airs will show blacks being rescued. If by some freak of nature Katrina had hit Greenwich Connecticut the majority of pics the media would air would be of whites being rescued. These are just the simple facts.

The NAACP and some of the senior members of the Democratic party should be flayed for what they are doing...politicizing the worst natural disaster to ever hit this country while the rescue efforts are still underway!!! Now is not the time to point fingers or attach the absurd idea of racism to this event...now is the time to come together as a country and show the rest of the world what being an American is really all about.

There have been some pretty awful disasters throughout the course of human history, and people didn't always respond by looting/raping/going berserk.

These days you just know that whenever catastrophe hits, some people are gonna work it to their advantage, from "societal leaders" of all stripes to the guy who "needs" a "free" television set.

I certainly sympathize with people who have immediate needs, I just think that too many people see every breakdown of the established order as an excuse to run amok. And then somebody with an agenda takes this as further "proof" of whatever they're pushing. And all this makes it even harder to recover and ends up literally killing people.

:werd: If you read any of Dr. King's writings or the text of his speeches, you will know he was a man of all people, not just blacks.

It is truly sad that some people are only restrained by consequences.

I believe he's referring to things like African-American History Month (Feb.) and the like. BTW, last year it was Black History Month, but I guess that wasn't P.C. so it was changed.

I personally never really cared for certain months or holidays that celebrate a minority race. Why? Because- the goal of the U.S. is to eliminate prejudices based on race, and it can't be done when people keep seperating themselves form the whole to celebrate their differences.

Sure, celebreate Black History Month, but don't expect me to participate with you until I get my own month or day to celebrate being white. Is it ever gonna happen for me? I'm sure as hell not going to hold my breath...

You're exactly right. That's the point I was trying to get across.

When hurricane Andrew came along, and the 3 hurricanes in Florida last year, no one played the race card when it took days and weeks to get power and supplies. By the time we got supplies, and power another hurricane was bearing down on us. There's blacks, whites, hispanic, indian, mesican, etc. I feel that them using the race card is a cheap way to cause troube. When the NAACP gets involved they stirr up nothing but trouble. Did you see a NAAWP? Nope. Yes I'm white and I am VERY proud of it. Some people are afraid to admit that they are proud to be white out of fear being called a racist :grinno: .

And if you think I'm a pinhead because of my opinion you can kiss my friendly (_!_). If you don't like what I have to say don't read it.

Lets not turn this into a pissing match shall we sweet Spilchy :furious:

The facts are that New Orleans was and is a high crime area with one of the highest murder rates in the country. The city was in bad shape before the hurricane and now is is truly a depressing place. I am still amazed at how peoples reaction is to loss. I did not see people burning Homestead when it was leveled by Andrew, or armed gangs raping and killing after dark. I am proud of our armed forces who came in a saved many and restored some order to a lawless place.

An observation from the UK news. Whilst there has been a fair amount of coverage of the looters and reports of rape etc, the bulk of the news seemed (in the first 5 days) to concentrate on how it took the richest and most powerful country in the world so long to react to this disaster. Of course this could simply be down to the sheer scale of this event.
