Whats up with Meguiars Scratch-X??

Decided to Clay Bar and wax my truck today and since there were some minor swirls and scratches I decided to use Mcguiar's Scratch-X after the Clay Bar.

I put the Scratch-X on half of the hood and let it haze, then started trying to get it off and much to my amazement it just would not come completly off. I rubbed until I was afraid I would do damage and got maybe 75% of it off. I ended up using some Mother's cleaner wax to remove the rest. I don't understand why this product was so hard to remove as the vehicle was in the shade and cool and I did not allow it to overdry before buffing it off with a MF towel.

I am very disappointd with this product and just wondering if someone else has experienced any dificulty with it or can advise me where I went wrong.

It appears that your technique is at fault. Scratch X is not a wipe on wipe off product and letting it "dry to a haze" is what most likely made it difficult to remove. The product must be thoroughly worked into the paint by hand with passion. Almost till it is dissipated.

yep :2thumbs:

it really does need to be worked well....and chances are you will need several attempts at any small 12" area to see a differance

To the OP I had the same problem. For some reason the directions on the bottle say to let it dry but everyone on these boards say to work it by hand with a ton of passion. I ended up using Meg's QD to get rid of it but if want to work by hand I've been recommended to use 1Z polishes. Accumulator has recommended them to me and if you're around the forums you'll notice he knows a thing or two.

Scratch X is a fantastic product and does in fact work at removing minor scratches. I'm not sure why the bottle recommends that it dries.

I'd post the how-to from Meguiars forum but their site is down now.

I have used Scratch-X a few times with decent results. I've only used it on

small areas, a specific defect, NOT an entire panel !!! I don't think it was designed

to be applied that way :nixweiss

You might be better off using Meg's Color-X

I think the main thing is ScratchX should NOT be applied to large areas. It is a rather oily formula to begin with, so you want to use it in moderation.

Practicing what I preach, today I used 1Z Ultra followed by 1Z Paint Polish on a scratch my wife picked up on her Audi. I didn't want to use a polisher if I could help it for one 1.5" scratch, and the 1Z stuff worked fine, just as user-friendly as ever. Took a little while with the hard Audi clear, but I reached for the 1Z stuff despite having a *lot* of different products to choose from.
