I too have been using the PC lately and its just taking *too much* time for me and I got disheartened when after 6 passes, Nothing much happened with my first time with the PC. Black car

I think its time for me to buy a Rotary.

In terms of RO polishers, the PC 7424 seems to be the Best.

What about in terms of Rotary? Whats causes the most *buzz* around town in terms of Rotary Polishers. I hear alot about makitas.

If you are a Rotary user please share your learning experiences with me and your thoughts on the best Overall rotary. Thanx. :)

I love my dewalt, makitas feel good too though...best advice I have is try to find them all locally and pick them up and feel which one is right for you. The dewalt is a lot heavier than the makita. Fein I think is lighter than the makita but more $$. It really comes down to what fits you the best and what is going to be comfortable in your hands for a few hours.

mystickid,

Your reason for jumping into rotary is the same as me, time. After a while, the PC is just too slow for doing any hard swirl removing.

I have the black and decker version of the dewalt. Its good and i like it. The problem is that its heavy. I heard many people say good things about the makita also. If i am not wrong, Anthony mention about the new Metabo polisher, maybe you should look into that too.

Thanx

Thanx guys,

I think I'll go for the Makita 9227.

Is there a 5" *Flex* Backing Plate for the Rotary???

Autogeek has a 5" Backing Plate but its not a Flex Plate.

Why not just buy one of the chicago rotaries? I mean, how often do you plan on using it? At least that way you will not have a bunch of $ tied up in a machine that rarely gets used. Just a thought. :nixweiss

ebpcivicsi,

That's a good thought. My only concern is that will the chicago Rotary perform as well as a Professional Makita 9227?

Do you know which Chicago Rotary polisher is the equivalent of the makita 9227?

You brought up a very good point because I am short on money.

I just received my Chicago rotary yesterday. It looks just like the Makita, except for color of course. When all is said and done, the Harbor Freight rotary is a $60 investement. This includes the polisher + shipping and the 4.75inch backing plate + shipping.

The HF rotary is not as quiet as the Makita. It actually sounds like their are some marbels bouncing around inside but this is normal and, quite frankly, doesn't bother me at all. I think it is a fantastic deal for the weekend enthusiast. I'm not sure of durability but, for $38, what do you have to lose?

Makita, metabo, dewalt and chicago are all top quality, I have a makita but will hopefully soon get a rupes rotary from Mizzuri after seeing his and the menzerna RD in action

With that one I will use the edge 2000 double sided pads rather than edge classic singles.

In terms of operation and Performance in producing results, would you Rotary users say that the makita rotary and Chicago Rotary are about the same despite the large difference in Price???

Don't forget to look at Ebay for a used 9227C. I got a killer deal on mine.

It's not without risk as the unit could potentially have been used by a granite installer etc that beat the crap out of it. However, considering how many times a home detailer would be using it, that shouldn't even be an issue. For the 1 or 2 twice a year that an newbie or enthusiasitic home detailer would be pulling it out, you won't exactly be hard on it.

The Fein WPO 12-27E is only 5.1 lbs!!! Too expen$ive though.

Specifications

Input Watts: 1,200

Output Watts: 750

No-load RPM: 900 – 2,700

Weight: 5.1 lbs

Features

Instantaneous electronic feedback system that maintains constant RPM no matter how much pressure is applied. You will not stall this tool.

Unique planetary gearing system that enables the tool to produce incredible torque.

Self-start lock prevents the tool from restarting if power supply is accidentally interrupted

That's why it's so expensive. Amazing piece of gear. Also, this site does an outstanding job of describing their tools.

that fein rotary's RPM is too high. My makita starts at 600 and that's what I start with and go no higher than 1100

having 600 start means I can buff unpainted and painted plastic bumpers, spoilers safely too.

mizzuri's sounded like it was running at 250-300 when he started when he came to my state for a business trip recently.

I love my Makita 9227, but you can't really go wrong with any of the big names. Metabo and Fein are on the lighter side, Dewalt is a bit heavier IIRC, but any of the four will be quiet, smooth and do what you need them to do. I'd get the 9227 again, but I haven't used anything but it and an old Snap-On.
